Penelope Stark Callender, known to her loved ones as Penny, passed away peacefully with both of her sons by her side on August 13, 2023, in Las Vegas, NV at the age of 84. Penny was born on May 27, 1939, in
Detroit, Michigan. She was a force of nature with a good heart and a razor-sharp wit who deeply loved her family and friends. Penny enjoyed engaging in lively conversations, indulging in good food, watching good movies and TV shows and playing many card games, especially bridge. Arranging groups of people in her home to both socialize & learn the intricacies of the game was a weekly passion for many years.
She decided to retire about an hour north of Las Vegas, in
Pahrump, NV where she built the home of her dreams, complete with a beautiful garden to explore on a daily basis, as well as a swimming pool. Later it was renamed a duck pond in honor of a family of ducks who frequently visited. In her free time, Penny enjoyed gardening, reading, needlepoint and clipping coupons and articles for her sons.
Penny is survived by her two sons, Edward "Toby" E. Callender of
San Francisco, CA; David B. Callender and his wife Naomi Sullivan-Callender of Nazare, Portugal and Prague, Czechia. She is also survived by her brothers Sheldon "Chip" Stark of Los Angeles; Jeff Stark of Maui, HI, Her nephews Jay Stark & his wife Rachel Stark; Aaron Felton of
Venice, CA, and several grand nieces and nephews.
Penny was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Callender, her beloved sister Trudy Stark Felton, her father Sheldon Hubert Stark, and mother Margery Winchell Stark.
Penny grew up in and around New York City, graduating from Garden City High School and obtaining her B.S. in Biology at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, CO, where she met her husband. She began her family in Grand Forks, ND and Ann Arbor, MI before moving to Reston Virginia. She had a successful career as a devoted mother to her two sons, as a real estate agent and appraiser, and finally as the publisher of the Antique Traveler Magazine in Reston, VA before retiring to
Pahrump, NV.
