Penelope Milford Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 16 to Oct. 17, 2025.
Penelope Milford, the Oscar-nominated actress whose nuanced turn as Vi Munson in Hal Ashby's "Coming Home" (1978) earned her a Best Supporting Actress nomination, died October 14, 2025, at a rehabilitation facility in Saugerties, New York. She was 77. The cause of death was not announced.

Born March 23, 1948, in St. Louis, Missouri, Penelope Dale Milford grew up in Illinois and graduated from New Trier High School in Winnetka. Her parents were Richard George Milford and Ann Marie (née Felt).

Milford built a career that bridged stage and screen with uncommon grace. On Broadway, she joined the cast of "Lenny" in 1972 and originated the role of Jenny Anderson in "Shenandoah," earning a Drama Desk nomination in 1975.

Her breakthrough in film came as Vi Munson in "Coming Home," opposite Jane Fonda and Jon Voight. The role brought critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination. She later portrayed silent-film star Lorna Sinclair in Ken Russell's "Valentino," appeared in Franco Zeffirelli's "Endless Love," and delighted cult-film fans as guidance counselor Pauline Fleming in "Heathers."

Milford's early screen credits included Norman Mailer's "Maidstone," and she continued working steadily through the 1990s in projects such as "The Burning Bed," "Normal Life," and "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, Part II."

In addition to her work on screens and the Broadway stage, Milford also spent time teaching and in community performance. She taught acting in Chicago and Minneapolis, performed with local theater in Saugerties, and sang with the Bard Symphonic Chorus. Colleagues and students remembered a generous artist who treated the work with rigor and warmth.

She is survived by her brother Douglas Milford and sister Candace Saint. Her younger brother, Richard Kim Milford, an actor and musician, predeceased her in 1980.

On the day I met Penelope, we were at the Catskill Mountain House site, with another friend. We planned a picnic.
As we began unwrapping the things we brought to share, I marveled at all the beautiful food that Penelope had brought to our gathering. We sat on a blanket overlooking the valley and enjoyed wonderful conversation and realized that we both had a love for restoration. I feel it bonded us instantly. I enjoyed visits to her home, going over thoughts and ideas for things she wanted to improve upon. I treasured her friendship.
On the day I took this photo, she and one of her good friends were looking over the mountain´s edge, looking for the Saugerties lighthouse in the distance. When I saw that pose, it made me think of Thomas Cole´s painting, Kindred Spirits. I gifted her with a canvas print of this photo and the next time I visited, it was there on the wall. I´m so glad I captured this moment in time and that I had time getting to know her. My condolences to her family, at this time, of great loss.

I knew Penny as a customer at the transfer station. I wondered why I had not seen her lately. One day she came in and her pants were ripped in the back. I said Penny your pants are ripped, she said is it sexy? Of course I said yes, very. We had a good laugh. She was a cool woman, I'll miss seeing her. Condolences to her family

Deepest condolences to the Milford family and friends. I was lucky enough to be in the Broadway cast of ''Shenandoah'' and to play ''Sam'' to her ''Jenny'' in the Wolftrap production in 1976. Working with her was like a class in acting. She was not just brilliant, she had a huge heart, gave generously of herself onstage and off. She was a luminous spirit and the world is a little less bright without her.
