Dear Russell Family...last weekend my husband and I were in an antique store in Weaverville, CA. From a distance, I saw a watercolor painting of a robin and had to get a closer look. Her painting spoke to me. It was addressed to Melissa from Penny Russell, 1990. Please know her painting touched my life and will hang with pride in my home.

Our dear Penny and David, and other family members...words are hard to express in the loss of a dear, dear friend. We have taken it hard to know she is no longer here on earth. Penny told me last year that she loved me like a sister that she never had and those words will remain in my mind and heart until the day that I pass on. The four of us had so much enjoyment together, going on trips, eating out, eating at each other's homes. And in the world of art, we certainly were a pair.

On Saturday, June 14, I was in the garden that we had started with you behind the Dillweed house, way back when the Indiana County Herb Study Group still met at the Courthouse basement. I could be mixed up about dates but that is one group I shall continue to be part of as long as I have the means to get to their meetings. I wish I had read about your passing then so that we could have memorialized you during the event. Rest in peace and joy as you watch over your family and your extended family...us!

Dear Penny, I know I had met you! You were still there when you invited the Indiana County Herb Study Group to plant the herb strip at Dillweed gardens. I am sorry I had not read this before Saturday's Pick-a-Dilly Herb Fair or we would have done an announcement at our booth, under the shade tree right at the entrance to the Dilltown Trail. Rest in peace and joy in company w your ancestors and friends. Our loving sympathies to your family...

I first met Penny when she arrived in Germany to join her husband who was a fellow soldier with me. She was well pregnant and I could not help but respect her for joining her husband for child birth in a foreign country. Penny was no shrinking violet. She made the delivery and recuperated in little time. The more I saw of her the more I realized She was one special human being. She played a part in my overcoming depression and understanding what life had to offer those who stood up to the tasks.
I was a much better humanist for having know her. God bless all like her

Our heartfelt sympathy on the profound loss that is a mom and a life partner.
The wry smile and twinkle in the eye sounds very familiar--now we know where the offspring all get that lighted up wit and presence... We enjoy our watercolor 'bloodroot' everyday. With love Lorraine & Mark

My deepest sympathies to the Russell family. Mrs Russell inspired my art in QV Jr High which continued through high school & was one of my college majors. I passed that love to my daughter who just got a college graphic arts degree, & my son who got a college film degree. She was a wonderful teacher. My thoughts go to Mr Russell, who was one of my favorite teachers in high school as well.

I was so saddened to learn of the passing of Mrs. Russell. She had a lot of compassion for those who felt they were "on the sidelines". She always displayed such enthusiasm during her classes--I never saw her in a bad mood--she was continuously "up" and that's hard to do when teaching! Leslie Bailey Shaw, QV Class of '73

My sympathies to Mr. Russell and the family. Mrs. Russell was the special teacher who students all remember. Although my artistic abilities ranked pretty low, my creativity and perseverance made up for it. Mrs. Russell recognized that and always encouraged me. To this day, I have the clay container on my desk at work that I use everyday from a project in the 7th grade. I have no doubt Mrs. Russell was a wonderful mother, grandmother and wife. We are all blessed to have known her.

Mrs. Russell was a huge inspiration in my life. She is the one teacher who understood me. As a student at QV Junior High in the 70's, I have always said I wanted to grow up to be just like her. She is the one teacher I've never forgotten. Thank you for inspiring me...Denise Wine Pipher

Dave, Cheryl and David,
Penny was truly an inspiration to me and captured the hearts of even those who didn't find meaning in art. Ironically, she was the first person who came to mind when I painted at a social event yesterday. I credited her in a FB post last night without knowing of her passing. Wonderful woman and lasting memories.

Penny was a very dear person and an important art mentor to me when I was young and our families were close. Penny and I stayed in touch throughout her life and we had some great visits over the years. I loved her wit and warmth. I will always picture her with a twinkle in her eye and a wry smile. To her family, all my deepest sympathies.

Mrs. Russell was both a fabulous artist and a creative teacher. I loved every minute in her class, and I still remember many projects, including making an elephant out of a hat box, a tissue box, and toilet paper rolls. She inspired creativity in her students regardless of their native talent, which in my case was practically none. My condolences to Mr. Russell, Cherie, and Dave.
