Perry Como Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 12, 2001.
Perry Como, famous for hits including "Catch a Falling Star" and "Papa Loves Mambo," was a dedicated showman who never forgot his roots as a humble barber, his friends recalled. The fatherly crooner, known for his mellow style and cardigan sweaters, died Saturday at the age of 88 at his home in Jupiter Inlet Colony, Fla. Como's daughter, Terri Thibadeau, said her father was with his caregiver when he closed his eyes and died while sitting in a chair in his bedroom. He had suffered from Alzheimer's for about two years, she said. His fellow entertainers on Sunday mourned the singer Bing Crosby once called "the man who invented casual." "In the times I was in his company, I found him to be a man who cared about listening to other people," comedian Don Rickles said. "Perry was a special kind of guy whose charisma will never be matched." Singer Tony Bennett remembered Como for his "warmth, relaxed charm and genuine goodness." "With Perry, what you saw on television was what he was, there was no artifice whatsoever," Bennett said. Comic Jack Swersie, who opened for Como during the singer's last three tours in the early 1990s, said he was amazed at how active the singer was even in his later years. "He was, simply put, the nicest person I have ever met and the greatest man I ever worked with," Swersie said. Como almost never ignored a fan, the comedian added, even when it was inconvenient. "One time our tour bus broke down outside of Pittsburgh, and we all took refuge in this roadside diner," Swersie recalled. "Of course, the employees all got on the phone immediately and told their friends and relatives who was stuck in their restaurant." The diner quickly filled with local fans seeking autographs and pictures with Como. "Perry didn't think he was better than anybody," Swersie said. "He treated everybody with respect and was always willing to give of himself." Born in Canonsburg, Pa., one of 13 children of Italian immigrants, Como left his job as a steel town barber in the 1930s to sing with big bands. His songs became a mainstay of radio and jukeboxes in the late 1940s and he pioneered variety shows in the 1950s. In 1945, Como had his first million-selling hit, "Till the End of Time." Rock 'n' roll eventually replaced the old-time crooners on the music charts, but Como continued performing on television in later decades, most notably with his famed Christmas specials. His career saw a resurgence in the 1970s with songs like "It's Impossible," "And I Love You So," which was first performed by "American Pie" singer Don McLean. "Perry Como was the epitome of class, style and decency _ three things we don't have a lot of in the music business anymore," McLean said Monday. "In his quiet but magical way, Perry Como was every bit the equivalent of Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett or any pop singer of the century." In 1987, President Reagan presented Como with a Kennedy Center award for outstanding achievement in the performing arts. Neighbors said the singer never let the accolades go to his head. Longtime friend Harry Pezzullo, golf director emeritus at Ballen Isles Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens, said he and Como played in many charity golf tournaments. "This was the most charitable man I met in my live," he said. "That's what people loved. He never said 'no' when it was a charity. This guy was ready to give you a helping hand." His wife, Roselle Como, died in August 1998, less than two weeks after she and Como celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. At a charity event weeks later, Como dedicated his hit "And I Love You So" to her, Pezzullo said. Neighbors Bob and Bea Snyder said they knew Como for two decades. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and talking with neighbors in the sleepy community of Jupiter Inlet Colony at the southern end of Jupiter Island. The couple has a vintage barber chair in their living room and Como, remembering his former career as a barber, used to offer to cut Bob Snyder's hair. "He offered every time he saw my chair," said Snyder, 69. "He said I don't know how long I'll be able to sing so I want to keep up with my barber's shears." Como's wake service is scheduled for Thursday evening at St. Edward's Catholic Church in Palm Beach. A funeral Mass will be held the next morning, the day Como would have turned 89.

One of my many and most favorite memory of Perry was singing and hearing one of his legendary songs, "Love Is A Christmas Rose" from one of his Christmas albums. On my wedding day to my wife, Liliana, she did not march down to the traditional wedding march, but to "Love Is A Christmas Rose" with one word changed, "Love Is A "Wedding" Rose", with the word "Wedding" substituted for the word "Christmas." At one of my concerts I sang the song "Love Is A Christmas Rose" during the Christmas season and during that song, I handed my soon to be wife, Liliana while I was singing a single red rose.

I will remember Perry "Till The End Of Time." As far as I'm concern there is "No Other Love" , singer, or person like Perry Como. I miss his Christmas shows from around the world, his television shows, concerts, and appearances wherever he was. My wife, Liliana, born on the 18th of the month (in November) like Perry gives me haircuts and I don't tell her when she does that I think it's Perry who's cutting my hair! "Perry, all I can say is "And I Love You So."

I remember the song "Catch a Falling Star" as a young girl. I am sure my parents played it. I was born in 1947, now 76. I loved Mr. Cosmo´s smooth, soft voice! I´ve always thought him handsome. My father passed from Alzheimer´s. Mr. Cosmo´s obituary is so moving, SO GLAD I read it! Thank you for sharing.

Perry gave us "Magic Moments" in our life time. He was a legend, an entertainer, a barber, a singer, and a genuine human being. He was "Wanted" by all. "It's Impossible" to begin to say how much Mr. C. touched so many people around the world. "Hot Diggity Dog Diggity," I'm so glad I admired watching him, hearing him, being a singer like him, and born from the same state as he, the State of Pennsylvania (like him, I was born just outside of Pittsburgh, Pa. in Oakland, and my grandmother and aunt are from Canonsburg, Pa.). Every time I went "Home For The Holidays" I was happiest to be back on home ground once again with my family members. Like he did, I retired in Florida and will be buried along with my wife in Florida just as he and his wife was. How lucky heaven is to have you there as we were to have you with us in our lifetime. "Rest In Peace, and hope one day we will meet and share our life's experiences in Pittsburgh, as singers, and in Florida."

There was no better person than "Mr. C." Like him I was born outside of Pittsburgh, Pa. in Oakland near the University of Pittsburgh, am a singer like he was, my grandmother and aunt are from Canonsburg, Pa., and was my idol and sang all his songs all my life. When I was a boy through adulthood, my parents played all his songs, and I sang along with him on the record player, with the cassette playing, the CD, and now on the computer. His influence for me to major in music in college as he did, will always be my lifelong ambition thanks to him. His life's journey, family, and places he went to present his Christmas Shows, I not only enjoyed watching and hearing him and his guests perform, but learned so much about the place and history where he performed and his musical career speaks for itself. He is and will always be irreplaceable. Thank God wherever his presence was, whether in person, on television, or anywhere in the world, he made an impression with everyone and was a true genuine human being. How I wish I had met him, sang a duet with him, and became a lifelong friend, but just knowing he existed on this earth just enough for me to say "what a wonderful man, human being, and entertainer." Believe it or not, we had many things in common, we were both singers, were born outside of Pittsburgh, Pa. (at a different year and month), my grandfather was born on May 13, 5 days before his birthday, my wife was born on the 18th, the exit off the highway where my wife and I reside in Florida is Exit 18 and enjoying retirement there, and my wife's wedding march down the aisle in church was the song he recorded, "Love Is A Christmas Rose." We were blessed to have him and make us forget our troubles and for just a brief moment what was going on in the world around us. "Rest In Peace Perry, you are and will surely be missed!"

On this Valentine's Day, I say to Perry and his family, "And I Love You So."

At 84 yrs old I still listen to Mr Como’s songs, there was no other like him and never will be. There were many singers over the years thru my teens and as an aging mother but none that stole my heart. His true love and respect for his wife is unheard of in the entertainment world. RIP Mr & Mrs Como

Growing up in Newark NJ in the 50’, 60’s I would watch The Perry Cuomo Show with my mom & dad and I loved him even then. I took my mom & mother in law to see him at the Arts Center in Holmdel in the late 70’s I believe. So very handsome in his tux and we were thrilled. My wedding song is It’s Impossible which I have on my phone and play it all the time. All the greats will never be replaced — Perry, Tony, Frank, Andy, Nat — love and miss them all. Thank you!

Today is the 20th anniversary of Perry's death. I'm 85 years old & have loved him & his music my whole life. I use to save my babysitting money when I was a screaming bobbysoxer to buy all his records! Such a beautiful singer & wonderful human being! I wish we had singers & music like that today but thankfully we will have Perry's music Till The End OF Time! He was a gem, now singing with the angels. I miss him!

Dear Perry grew up listening to your music and watched your tv shows faithfully. My father always said the best singers were the 3 C's, Crosby, Como and Cole. I finally saw you in person at the Arts Center in Holmdel NJ. We took our mothers Angie and Josephine. We were all thrilled to be a part of a great evening. The audience kept yelling to take off your tux jacket and you replied that you would fall apart. You always had a great sense of humor. Thank you for It's Impossible. Your music will live forever. My Dear Mr. C:

Words can not convey your contribution to music and the human race . To say that you were unique, and a role model beyond comprehension, is a gross understatement. We lived close to you when you lived on the Loxahatchee River and I had the pleasure of being "waved over" while you were on your dock. Same friendly wave from your dock on Jupiter Inlet Colony.

I would like to share a couple of Perry stories from my youth. On Halloween, as my youngest sister made her rounds in the neighborhood to trick or treat. She would include going to Perry's home - through that beautiful entrance with the big wrought iron gates. Who should come to the door giving out candy - Perry Como!

Another - The Royal Lion restaurant, owned by the Kimmel's, - a local Jupiter, Florida favorite, kept a permanent table for Perry and his wife - towards the back.. One evening my mother and father were lucky enough to be seated in front of their table. The Waitress came to the Como's table and lit the candle in the center then went away to place the appetizer order - everyone's favorite of hot home made biscuits and gravy. When she came back, the candle was out so she relit it and went back t to place the dinner order. When she came back, the candle was out again. When she went to light it again he gently touched her hand and said in that incredibly mellow voice - "it's okay honey, I don't want it lit".

Another - Perry had built a mountaintop mansion in Saluda, NC to get away from the crowds and escape the Florida summer heat. Saluda could not believe their good fortune! He kept it a secret for awhile, but eventually, word leaked out and the masses converged on the little NC mountain town. - everyone wanting to know where Perry lived. The entire town protected his privacy and would not divulge information. Years later, after Perry's death, I was in the area and tried to find out where he lived. The locals STILL would not say a word.

The incredible Perry Como. You will always be my favorite. See you in heaven Mr. C. Can't wait to hear you sing "And I Love You So" !!

I've loved Perry Como for 66 years! He was always my favorite singer. I was fortunate enough to see him perform 4 times. I got to meet him in Las Vegas. My husband and I had stopped after his show for a late night snack. I told the waitress we'd just been to his show. She said do you want to meet him? She escorted me to a private dining room where he, Nick Pierto (his conductor) and two other men were seated at a table.!! I was beyond thrilled! We exchanged a few words and he signed my program! He let me kiss him on his cheek!

Dear Perry,
Still think of you all the time as I listen to your songs on my stereo and reminisce of days gone by and will never be again. I thank you for bringing into our homes the gift of music, the gift of love, and the gift of just you. So many of your songs are so very dear to me that it's hard to choose only one. You sang love songs to melt even the hardest of hearts because you sang them with true meaning. Thank you, Perry, as one of your closing themes said "You Are Never Far Away From Me".

Oh my goodness. I am watching PBS special on Perry. I'm 77 years young and Iam so sorry that I was remiss on his passing, as I was caring for my very ill husband, who left this world shortly after Perry. I loved Perry. Watched practically all of his shows. He was a gentleman, above all else, class personified. Oh how I loved him. There will never be another. Rest In Peace you wonderful man.

Dear Perry...Would you be so kind...and you sang requested songs at the end of each tv show! I can remember you sitting in that stool with the song sheets in front of you and feeling as though you were just singing to me.
You will live on in my 75 year old heart forever...I only hope your children know how fortunate they were to have such a decent religious man for their father. Rosalie must have loved you dearly as you love her till the end of time. May you always Rest In Peace knowing the world will never forget Mr. C...

So many years ago, my dad--who died when I was only 14--was working as a janitor in a music studio when Mr. Como came in. My dad never forgot that Mr. Como talked to him like he was his equal, like he'd just met an old friend--even though my dad was a janitor and Mr. Como was a superstar.. When I met Perry at a concert in Las Vegas 15 to 20 years ago, I told him that story. And you know what he said? "I remember." A true class act and forever missed.
