A fledgling politician from the peninsula who won his Congress seat over Shirley Temple. I delivered the SF Chronicle and always read the headlines, even as a 12 year old.
Soon after he entered politics, I was a Scout in Troop 269 and on a planned "Historic Trails Award" hike We were to traverse up the believed trail Gaspar de Portola traveled when he discovered the San Francisco Bay. Our small group was surprisingly joined by Pete (I distinctly remember his "butch cut"), the then young politician, and US Marine. Pete lead the charge up the ridge hike, as we scaled Sweeney Ridge near Pacifica. Not to be outdone, two of us Scouts would not be outpaced and with young zeal and drive we arrived just, barely, ahead. Pete spent some time with us as we enjoyed the view as clouds swept in. Pete did not join us for the mandatory sleep the night at the site as the cold, drizzle bathed 10 or so of us Scouts all night. I yet hold these memory of Pete, and his continuing political career. They are refreshed each time I look at the stamped Leather Historic Trails Award patch I still have.
Peace to you Pete.

Pete's family lived across the street from me in McClean, VA. His daughter Cathy and I were very good friends and we used to play together constantly. When they returned to California for vacations, I would take care of their dog Maui and their cat Tex. I saw Pete as my friend's father. I've no doubt that he served as an example of kindness and a man of honor to all of his family and am confident that your memories of Pete will lift you up. If Cathy is interested in contacting me, I would love to hear from you; I have often thought of you. My sincerest condolences to the entire family.

I admired this wonderful man- a war hero & a true patriot I met him twice-when I worked on his presidential campaign & when i was setted on a jury where he was a lawyer for one of the parties-I told the judge I could not be impartial, I had to vote with Pete--I was excused while Pete smiled at me-later shook my hand.
