We just heard now of Peters disappearance and death. He was such a respected sailor and we knew him for years. When my husbands brother had an accident and stroke at the age of 29 , he visited him and spoke to him about recovery. Our hearts go out to Moira and all of family...Linda and Michael Cooper

I was shocked to read off Peter's passing last year and my heart felt condolences are extended to his family. I first met Peter in the early 1970s when I was on the Neurosurgical staff of T.W.H. and beginning my career in the surgical treatment of pain with stimulation of the spinal cord and peripheral nerves as well as stimulating the phrenic nerve for diaphragmatic pacing. Peter played a key role in this treatment and research by providing results of his EMG studies of the patient's diaphragms. He was always so pleasant, helpful and interested in these projects that it made the work seem simple and worthwhile.
Our paths have since diverged but the best memories live on and provide comfort til we meet again

Dear Moya,
I am very sorry to only now hear of your loss, my very sincere condolences and I still have fond memories of our time together in London, your marriage to Peter, the Picasso exhibition in Paris for a weekend together with my wife Neridah in the late 60's. You and Peter also came to Sydney for a short working period in the 70's and your son Mark came to work at my office in Sydney for a short while as a student. Should you ever visit Sydney please make contact.
Sincerely, Mark

Dr. Ashby, my neurologist for 34 years, was truly one of the kindest doctors I have ever had the pleasure to meet. He always knew what to do to help me and he will be very much missed by me and so many of his MG patients. My condolences to his family at this time.

My deepest condolences to Dr. Ashby's family and loved ones. I had the privilege of getting to know briefly and he seemed like a kind, wonderful and funny soul. I recall him being curious and insightful during our conversations, and how humble he was despite his countless accomplishments. I hope you find some comfort in knowing he did so much for the Neurology community and will be missed.

Take care.

My condolences to Peter’s family on such a great loss. Peter was a superb teacher, scholar and neurologist who was a much valued resource for other neurologists and a kindly, thoughtful person with his patients. I personally enjoyed very much his amiable company when sailing with him on Lake Ontario in the “Duck house” as he told me the boat was dubbed by his children and also camping with him in Algonquin Park. We have very fond memories of Peter.

The last time my wife Jane and I sailed Lotus, Peter and Moya, along with our friend Johnny Carroll were on board for a short afternoon cruise on the lake.
Peter looked so at home sitting in the cockpit. When he took the helm for a while, he instantly was at one with the boat—a treasured memory.

Peter always made you feel better when you met him—good humoured, kind, helpful, formidably intelligent, unfailingly polite—a true gentleman.
In his younger days he had played the cello. I’ll bet he was damn good at it too. (He told me that tympanists love playing Mozart—just the kind of thing a Renaissance man would know).

We can’t picture him not being excellent at anything he put his mind to. His digitally created Christmas cards are things of beauty and originality.

Our thoughts are with his loved ones. We share their sadness.

Peter will be missed by many. His kind doesn’t come along very often.

He was my brother-in-law and known in the family as Uncle Peter, a happy, welcoming and unassuming man. So many memories over the years where Peter's quirky sense of humour added to family bonding between Canada and UK.
My heartfelt sympathy to Moya who has lost her best friend and life long companion.

My fondest memories of working with Dr. Ashby at TWH include his kindness and the utmost respect he showed everyone, not just his fellow physicians but also the techs like myself and secretaries. He was very patient and always took the time to explain things to us. I learned so much from working with him. I remember getting articles of neuromuscular diseases in preparation for our patients. He was such a great teacher.

He always lead by example. Dr. Ashby was the first one in and last one out of the clinic on Fridays. He was generous and offered help anytime he could. His quick wit and sense of humour always lightened up our days.

It was an absolute pleasure having worked with Dr. Ashby. Sending my sincerest condolences to Mrs. Ashby and the rest of the family.

Everyone has favourite memories of those who pass leaving their footprints in the sand, or on the souls of those who so admired them. Why did I think Peter was so special? What if I said because he rode up Bayview with his wonderful wife, Moya, to get home after a long day of sailing. I couldn't help but admire that...it was a long, uphill slog! And they did it faithfully, every time they came to the club. Okay, what if I said it was because he rented a table at the Island Christmas Boutique to sell his very, very special cards, produced digitally but with so much extra included. First the idea, a scene that resonated, usually with a figure included. Scenes from his observance on the island and within the club grounds. Scenes so startling in their simplicity and originality, painted from his own viewpoint and with his extraordinary colouring, And there he sat at the fair, being one of us. Love. How about the serious and wise diary entries home, regaling us with their adventures while cruising. Not just the adventures but every day observances that formed a poem of beauty and wisdom.
I didn't know Peter well but what I saw I cherished. I am so sorry to feel you gone, Peter. May you rest in peace.

Peter Ashby was a great colleague over several decades. He was so helpful in participating in the diagnosis and treatment of patients that desperately needed his expertise, so many of whom would comment on his quiet kindness and empathy. We will all miss him, but we are comforted by the thoughts of all of us who benefited from knowing him.
We hope the family will be able to take solace from the thoughts of all of his patients and colleagues who share their loss.

Peter, always was passionate about sailing and will I always treasure sailing with him from NYC to Bermuda on George’s boat and again from St Martin to Antigua. It was a happy time and loads of laughs with Jan, Peter, myself and George all single handers. My sincere condolences to Moya and family and many sailing friends here in Toronto and around the World. In my first few years with Peter and Moya's old boat Candy Cane, I'd often remark that whatever harbour I'd sail into, the boat had more friends than I did. It didn't take many conversations with Peter to see why this was the case; he was such a pleasant, sweet, and friendly man, and will definitely continue to be missed.

Peter was always the consummate gentleman in his dealings with everyone. He was very easy to talk to and his friendly demeanour made everyone want to engage him in conversation. He was also highly intelligent and had a way of looking at things that made sense. I know he did a lot of work for Queen City and helped make the jobs for some Directors like myself a lot easier.
Our Club will not be the same without him and he will be deeply missed.
My sincere condolences.
