CAPELLO, Dr. Peter Joseph
January 16, 1931 - January 21, 2017
Peter passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, January 21, 2017, after a long struggle with vascular dementia. He was blessed to be surrounded by Maureen, his cherished wife of 60 years, and his loving family. He will be forever deeply missed by his children - Susan (Tom King), Ann, Peter (Caroline Gibson), Tim (Trish McDonald), Lynda (Shane Ireland) and Nancy. Peter leaves to grieve the pride and joys of his life, his 17 grandchildren: Meghan (Scott Penner), Andrew (Danielle), Caitlin (Jimmy Therrien) and Stephen King, Clinton Green, Jamie and Christopher Capello, Kathryn, Alexandra and Cameron Capello, Ryan, Kelli and Haley Ireland, Nicholas, Michael, Patrick and James Desjardins. He also leaves his great- granddaughters Olivia Penner and Gabrielle King. Peter was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Irene (LaChapelle). He was loved by his brothers Paul (Judith) and Gerry (Pegi) and brothers-in-law Dennis (deceased) (Shirley), Tim (Kate - deceased) and Pat (Cathy) O'Rourke. Peter was a well- respected, dedicated surgeon for 45 years. He was known by all as a "true gentleman." Over the years his wisdom and talents shaped the careers of thousands of young doctors as a mentor in the OR and as an Associate Professor at the U of O. He also served as Chief of Staff at the Civic Hospital. Peter loved spending time at his cottage, fishing, skiing, biking, and in his many gardens, but his most treasured moments were spent with family. Our special appreciation to Dr. Louise Coulombe for her tireless guidance and care. Deep thanks also to his devoted caregivers at Valley Stream Retirement Home. Their love, care, dedication and humour will not be forgotten. Visitation to take place at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Road, (Between Bayshore and Baseline Road) on Monday, January 23 from 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Church on Tuesday, January 24 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Autism Society of Ontario Ottawa Chapter would be appreciated. So sad to hear of your Dad's passing. A real gentleman. Some people may think driving up to 31 Mile Lake to chase leaks sprouting up all over the cottage plumbing system as alot of work. I think your Dad saw that as a challenge and escape on weekends. Peter's character lives on in his children and grandchildren. Maybe knowing that will ease the pain during these difficult times.

Dear Maureen and Family,

We felt very privileged to grow up with the Capello family. There were a lot of fun times which were always well supervised by Maureen and Betty.

Our dad was especially enamoured with the tomatoes Dr Capello grew in his backyard garden. He would even ring their doorbell to ask for some, much to our mother's chagrin.

I'm sorry that I am unable to be there at this very sad time. I remember the love and support you gave our parents when they were ill.

Maureen, So sorry to learn of Peter's death.I had a great deal of respect and admiration for you husband both personally and professionally.We shared a number of patients and enjoyed working and caring for them together.
Since moving to the West Coast, I lost track of him and was troubled to learn of his serious health problems in the later part of his life. Seems that even the best of physicians can't avoid what nature and God has in store for us.
