Peter Carroll Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 9, 2024.
Peter J. Carroll, 84, passed away suddenly on July 1, 2024, in Phoenix, Arizona. Pete was born in New York City to Arthur and Evelyn Fisher Carroll on April 8, 1940. His father subsequently moved the family to California. A defining moment in Pete's life was the loss of his mother, Evelyn, to cancer in 1949. Pete later attended Bellarmine College Prep and remained close to many of his Bellarmine classmates. After high school, Pete attended Arizona State College (NAU) where he met his first wife, Sandra. Sandra and Pete lived in Daly City outside of San Francisco and had two sons, Christopher & Stephen. Pete went to work with The Equitable and moved his family to Phoenix in 1969. After his divorce in 1973, Pete married Virginia Schultz from Tucson and the couple remained together in Phoenix for the next 48 years.

Pete's boys have lasting memories of street football in front of the house and the occasional fishing trip, which most often turned out to be more of a lesson in patience than catching fish. Pete was a unique character, surprising the boys with their first family pet: T-Bone, the desert tortoise. At various times and to varying degrees he enjoyed playing golf, trips to Las Vegas, college football and hockey. His passions included Native American art (he had wonderful collections of baskets, rugs, pottery, and fetishes) and an eclectic love of music that ranged from Rachmaninoff to the Rolling Stones. Pete was also a very talented photographer. He and Virginia (together with trusty sidekick PJ) traveled to many State and National Parks and Monuments throughout the western United States and Canada capturing beautiful landscapes and wildlife.

Pete leaves behind his beloved wife of 48 years, Virginia, his sons, Christopher (Diane) and Stephen (Carole) and his grandchildren, Bridgette (Andrew) Bryant and Daniel, and his siblings Anne Wooliver, Barbara (Brian) Robinson, Tony (Karen) Carroll, Robert (Vicki) Carroll and Joan (Mark) Innes who will cherish his memory. Peter was preceded in death by his twin brother John (who died shortly after birth), mother Evelyn, brother Art (aka Buddy) and father Arthur.

A graveside service will be held at Holy Redeemer Catholic Cemetery 23015 Cave Creek Rd, Phoenix, AZ on October 14, 2024, at 10:30 am, where family and friends will gather to honor his life and legacy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either St. Mary's Food Bank or Arizona Humane Society.
