DOOLEY, Professor Peter C.
Professor Peter C. Dooley died peacefully on June 19, 2012 following a lengthy struggle with a brain tumour. The highly regarded Economics professor spent most of his professional career at the University of Saskatchewan, from 1966 until he retired in 2005. He was a talented teacher who wrote several important textbooks on economics, including Elementary Price Theory (1967, 1973) and Introductory Macroeconomics (1975). Professor Dooley pursued an active research program on the history of economic thought, publishing regularly throughout his career and into his retirement. His final and most ambitious book,The Labour Theory of Value, was published in 2005.
He received a B.A. in 1959 from Grinnell College, and a Ph.D. in 1964 from Cornell University, earning several prestigious fellowships to support his studies. While at Grinnell, he met Anne Moore, the love of his life. They were married in 1959.
Over the years, Professor Dooley was also a Visiting Scholar at the University of Cambridge, Visiting Senior Fellow at the University of Stirling, Visiting Professor at the University of Venice and Visiting Fellow at the University of Glasgow. He lectured across Canada and abroad, and worked at various times as an author, researcher, labour negotiator, economic consultant and advisor. He was a member of the Canadian Economics Association, the American Economics Association, the History of Economics Society and the Royal Economics Society.
Professor Dooley was extremely active in the University's Faculty Association where he developed a reputation as a fierce defender of the underdog and a highly effective negotiator. He served on numerous university committees and a lengthy term as President of the Faculty Association. The Canadian Association of University Teachers honoured his contributions with its Dedicated Service Award.
A passionate observer of world affairs and insatiable traveller, Peter spent many happy hours in the kitchen cooking delicious meals for his family and friends, working in his magnificent garden, and designing and constructing beautiful furniture. He was often seen driving his bright blue vintage Triumph Spitfire down prairie roads. Peter enjoyed the outdoors as a hunter and fisherman, and was always ready to watch a football or baseball game to cheer on his Chicago Bears or Toronto Blue Jays. He was blessed with a tremendous intellect and unfailing memory. Everyone who knew him enjoyed his superbly clever yet exceptionally dry wit.
Peter and Anne had four children, Brigid (Eric Tremblay), Kevin (Sherry Biscope), Adam (Lynn Billard) and Nathan. Their six wonderful grandchildren, Zachary Tremblay, Ethan Billard Dooley, Alexandre Tremblay, Aidan Billard Dooley, Michael Tremblay and Alice Dooley all remember Peter as a loving and supportive Granddaddy. Although they are now spread far and wide, they remain a close and loving family who now grieve a great loss.
A celebration of Peter's life will be held for family and friends on Thursday, June 28th, commencing at 3:00 p.m. at the Faculty Club, 101 Administration Place on the campus of the University of Saskatchewan.
A special memorial scholarship fund will be set up in Professor Dooley's name at the University of Saskatchewan Economics Department.
