Peter DUECK Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Feb. 24, 2015.
DUECK, Peter Albert
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Albert Dueck on February 19, 2015. He was predeceased by Helen, his beloved wife of 62 years, and survived by his four children, Ed (Carole), Gerald (Anne), Larraine (Mark) Kandal, Leonard (Pamela) and nine grandchildren, Jennie, Melanie, Stefanie, Brittanie (Perry) Thiessen, Cameron, Alissa, David, Taylor and Landon and one great-grandchild, Silas Thiessen.
Peter was born on July 5, 1923 in Orenburg, U.S.S.R. At three years of age, he immigrated to Canada with his parents and two sisters. They settled in Coaldale, Alberta, where Peter grew up on the family farm.
At age eighteen, Peter moved to British Columbia in search of opportunities to take advantage of his tremendous initiative and capacity for hard work. This was interrupted by a brief return to Coaldale motivated by his desire to marry Helen, whom he first met in grade two. She accepted his proposal, and they married on November 16, 1946.
The happy couple established a home in Abbotsford, B.C., where they raised their children. The Dueck home soon became the focal point for social gatherings attended by family and friends. People were drawn to Peter's friendly, outgoing and jovial nature.
Together, with Helen's kindness and tireless hospitality, they made a great team.
Peter began his business career in 1951 as co-founder of MSA Motors in Abbotsford. Over the years, he established other car dealerships and later, after having worked as a real estate salesman for a time, purchased and operated a successful real estate and insurance agency.
Always looking for new challenges, Peter began his political career in 1978, serving as an alderman and deputy mayor for the Municipality of Matsqui. He turned to provincial politics in October 1986, when he was elected to the B.C. Legislature. During his seven years in the provincial government, Peter held cabinet posts in more than one portfolio, including the Ministry of Health. In government as in business, Peter earned a reputation for integrity and competence.
Throughout his working life, Peter was involved in community service, serving on boards and committees too numerous to mention.
Peter and Helen enjoyed leisure time together. They snow skied, played tennis and loved ballroom dancing. They also put a lot of effort into creating beautiful gardens, winning six gardening awards sponsored by the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board.
In spite of his busy schedule, Peter was a devoted husband and father who always had time for his family. He cherished Helen and provided an excellent role model for his children. As for his grandchildren, they will have many happy memories of a warm and playful grandfather.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to Dad's long time physician Dr. David Froese, the staff at Fraser Health Kidney Care Centre for their dedication, understanding and support (special thanks to Bobbi) and the staff at "Nurse Next Door" for their kindness, patience and professionalism in caring for Dad.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Kidney Foundation of Canada, www.kidney.ca
Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm, Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at Central Heights Church, 1661 McCallaum Road, Abbotsford. Online condolences to the family may be made at

Dueck family,
I have numerous memories of my friend Peter, from my purchase of the real estate company to politics to tennis to many many coffees. His qualities that stand out for me are optimism, determination, integrity and of course humour - all enhanced by a great zest for life. Peter accomplished much but isn't it interesting that at the end of life we remember family, love and relationships. He was deeply blessed.

We are sorry to hear of Peter's passing. We saw him as a fun-loving, energetic, generous, and kind and caring man. We enjoyed the many tennis tournaments he held each Labor Day weekend. Peter and Helen's hospitality was enjoyed by everyone who came to their home. He always made each person feel like they were special. To the family - cherish the memories of a very special family.

To the dueck family
We are thinking of you and are sorry we can't be there for you. We remember the many visits we had with your family over the years either at your place or ours and the many dinners we shared.
Your dad taught us all to water ski in the summers at cultus lake.
We had so much fun at your beautiful home playing tennis, not to mention the "tournaments" your dad organized, that he was sure he was going to win!
The children loved the pool. It was a highlight for them
and couldn't wait until the next time.
Your dad and mom always made sure we had a good time.
Al still remembers and appreciates buying his first car from uncle Peter when he was a University student and had very little money.
Your dad was kind, generous, funny and usually
had a joke or story to tell.
Uncle Peter lived a long and extra ordinary life which all of you can be very proud. Love john, Em, Dick, Eleanor, Al, Marnie, Ed and Kathy.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

We were so very sad to hear that your Dad has passed away. We loved the times spent together as families when we were young, and treasure those memories. He could always be counted on to bring fun to any occasion! We know how much he will be missed, and want you to know how much we are thinking of you.

Peter Dueck first came to my attention when he was a minister in the Provincial Government. I was impressed with his integrity and his no nonsense approach and became a fan. You can imagine the honour it was for me when I got a call from him to re-decorate his suite in the tower. Working in his home and rubbing shoulders, with him and his wife Helen, for the next few weeks, was a great pleasure and he did not disappoint in my assessment of his character. I worked in the towers many times after that and he always greeted me as a friend, and over the years, I considered him to be one. Success in business and politics does not come to those without solid character, friendliness, and a positive attitude. That is what I will remember him for.

Uncle Peter was a treasured uncle of mine. Growing up on the same street I have many memories of us visiting at Aunt Helen & Uncle Peter's house with lots of laughter. Halloween was always special as we ended up the night at their house with awesome fireworks and the best candy! I will always remember when my Mom was ill with cancer he & Aunt Helen were at her bedside daily and were my strong support. My mom told me than that "he was always her hero". After my Mom died Uncle Peter & Aunt Helen were very kind to my children Josh, Elysia & I - remembering us on special occasions and always available to chat and have us over for meals. My deepest sympathy to Larraine, Ed, Gerald, Leonard and their families - you are in my thoughts and prayers.

When our family first moved to Abbotsford from Kelowna, Uncle Peter took us in until we found a place. He & Aunt Helen were always generous & giving that way. Celebrating Easter while we were still living there was very special because the cousins & us had a great time looking for all the Easter candies & eggs that had been hidden. Uncle Peter recorded us kids running around his property trying to find the goodies, on his 8mm camera - it was so much fun to watch it after! He was an uncle I saw every week, if nothing else in church. He always had a smile. Great memories. To the kids & family - we are keeping you in our thoughts and prayers.

Uncle Peter was a treasured uncle of mine. He was full of energy and enthusiasm, kind and caring, with a multitude of interests. I'll always remember the amazing garden that Uncle Peter and Aunt Helen planted and nurtured in Abbotsford. Our deepest sympathy to his family as you mourn his passing. We hope that you cherish your joyful times together and wonderful memories.

I greatly feel the loss of my eldest brother, Peter. He was very kind and always remembered his siblings with phone calls. He and Helen were most hospitable and warmly invited us into their lovely home. He had a great sense of humour, and a kindly teasing nature. I love him and will miss him.
