Peter Koo Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 12, 2016.
Peter J.S. Koo passed away peacefully on January 8, 2016 surrounded by his family. He had struggled with health complications that hindered his recovery from back surgery in 2014. Peter was born on May 22, 1949 in Shanghai, China, just days before the Communists marched into the city. Peter's father William escaped in 1957, and in 1961 the Koo family reunited in Hong Kong. In 1963 they boarded a ship to San Francisco and established their home in Palo Alto, CA. Peter worked as a clinical pharmacist specializing in pain management at UC San Francisco for 34 years. He loved his work, pushed his students and residents to become better clinicians, and helped many patients over the years. Peter was patient and kind. He loved spending time with family, whether at a Cal football game or on the calm fishing waters. He was also a handyman, poker player, avid fisherman, golfer and cook. Peter was an adventurous epicurean who never said no to a new recipe or hot sauce. More than anything, he cherished the moments when his friends and family gathered to savor a delicious meal. He is survived by his wife of 42 years Debbie of Moraga ; daughter Jackie of Sacramento; son Ryan and his wife Kendall Walker Koo of Orinda; siblings Paul Koo and his wife Darice of Palo Alto, John Koo and his wife Theresa Yang of Los Angeles, and Michele Koo and her husband Rick Lehman of St. Louis; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions made to UCSF School of Pharmacy in memory of Peter Koo or St. Monica's Soup to Serve Ministry St. Monica's Soup to Serve Ministry

Michele and I were shocked to hear of the news. Peter was too vibrant a person to have left us this soon. He will be missed. I fondly remember his big smile that he greeted everyone with. What a joyful person.

Our hearts and thoughts go out to the entire Koo family who has been a great friend to the Fong family. Most especially, to Debbie, Ryan, and Jackie we feel very deeply for your loss. Peter was gone too soon.

With deepest condolences,

Peter was a wonderful friend and we have many great memories which we will always hold dear. Some of our favorites were the trip to China with the Koo family, MHS and Cal football games, fly fishing trips to Colorado, deep sea fishing on the bay, weekend adventures to Sonoma, Tahoe and Angel's camp, along with
many fun dinners with Peter, his family and friends. Peter had such a warm heart for others and an amazing love of nature. He will be greatly missed!
Our heartfelt condolences are extended to Debbie, Jackie, Ryan and Kendall.

My heartfelt condolences to you and your family. Peter was an incredibly warm and generous soul and I will deeply miss his presence. Peter has been my mentor since residency and our offices were next to each other for over 8 years, until his retirement. He was a major force in my everyday life, and we shared stories of family and snacks through our open office doors almost daily. He was so proud of Jackie and Ryan and I feel as if I watched them grow up before me in his stories and photos of colleges, graduation, and weddings. He always knew if you were having a tough day and always had time to listen. Peter was truly an amazing human being and very much larger than life. I feel immense gratitude in knowing him. Thank you for sharing him with us.

Sending thoughts and condolences to your family. Dr. Koo was my preceptor during my fourth year rotations. His trust in my independence allowed me to learn so much in a short period of time. I am saddened by this news. May he rest in peace.
