Peter J. Maniatis

September 25, 1928 – May 11, 2025

With deep love and gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of Peter (Taki) J. Maniatis on May 11, 2025, at the age of 96.

Born on September 25, 1928, to the late John P. and Bertha Maniatis, Peter was the eldest of four children. He was a proud Greek Orthodox Christian and a devoted son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife Joan, brother Nick and sister Elaine, and was preceded in death by his brother Jim.

He was drafted into the United States Army and proudly served his country-an experience he held in the highest regard throughout his life.

After his military service, Peter worked for many years in the family's donut business before making a bold change at age 40 to pursue a new path in real estate and custom home building. Through determination and hard work, he built not only homes but a respected career and reputation. He continued to work passionately into his nineties, finally stepping back at the age of 92.

Peter shared a remarkable 70-year marriage with his beloved wife, Joan Maniatis. True to his character and determination, he fulfilled one of his final wishes-celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary on April 23, 2025, surrounded by the love of family. It was a beautiful and unforgettable moment.

He was the proud and loving father of three sons: John (Natalie), Lee (Tara), and Bill (Jennifer). His legacy lives on through his six grandchildren: Peter John, Nathaniel, Mia, Peter William, Margo, and Sofie.

Peter will be remembered for his enduring support of his family, his quiet strength, and his signature look-always dressed in a suit and tie, even for a day at Wrigley Field cheering on his beloved Cubs.

In every suit he wore, every home he built or sold, and every sacrifice he made, Peter showed what it means to live with a purpose. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

Dear Joan, John, Lee, Bill, and family,

My dad, Ron (Berghuis), just informed me about Pete´s passing. Needless to say, I was very sad to hear the news. I thought and hoped that he would live forever! It sure seemed that way! He was blessed with a beautiful, long life and a beautiful, wonderful family!

I´m so very sorry for your loss. Peter was such a sweet man, and I have only the fondest memories of him. Every time I would go to visit my dad at the office, I would always walk past Pete´s office and he would always wave me in with a big smile on his face. I would give him a hug and he would give me a hug back. He was like another uncle to me. He always dressed so sharp and was always such a gentleman and so kind always asking about how my life was going, while having a twinkle in his eye. He worked at my grandfather´s business for so long that he was more like family to me in my heart than just another realtor. I know my mom, Kitchie, and my brother, Jeff, and of course, my dad, felt that way, too. He was a very special man and I´m so sad that he´s no longer with us.

I really enjoyed looking at all the photos that were shared by John, I´m guessing? It was like a trip down memory lane. I especially appreciate the old newspaper clippings. I´ve never seen those before, but it was wonderful to see them and read them. I would love to finish reading all of them. I don´t think I´ve ever seen those before . My mom tried to keep many momentums of my grandfather`s business, but things were lost along the years. What a treasure to still have those wonderful newspaper clippings! It was such a different time... Seemed like an easier time, more fun and less complicated-at least from a child´s perspective.

My family and I loved Pete and we will miss him. I can speak for all of us when I say we extend our hearts and our prayers to Joan and Pete´s sons and their families. God bless you all and may he keep you close during this difficult time.

With much love,
Kerry (Berghuis) McGehee
