It is with profound sadness that Weill Cornell Medicine mourns the loss of its dear friend, benefactor and leader Peter Meinig. At Cornell University, Pete was a giant whose stewardship on its Board of Trustees - first as a member and then a decade as chairman - enhanced the university's proud tradition as a force for the public good. A champion of research, scholarship and service, Pete's leadership, with strong support and involvement of his wife Nancy at every level, knew no bounds and touched Cornell's campuses in Ithaca and New York City. At Weill Cornell Medicine, Pete served on the Board of Overseers as well as its Business and Finance Committee, and his early leadership helped make the creation of the Weill Greenberg Center and Belfer Research Building possible. He and Nancy established the Nancy E. and Peter C. Meinig Dean's Research Fund for Scientific Recruitment and Advancement to bring leading scientists to our campus and support their work. The Meinigs also gave a lead gift to help establish the Mark S. Brower, M.D. Lecture in Hematology and Oncology, established a grant to foster collaboration between investigators in Ithaca and New York City, and generously supported cardiovascular research and training, among many other areas. Pete's lasting impact is exemplified in Cornell's Meinig School of Biomedical Engineering, which he and his family enhanced from a department with the largest single philanthropic commitment by individual donors to one of the university's colleges in Ithaca. His vision is reflected in Cornell Tech, which was born under Pete's leadership and realized this month when it opened on Roosevelt Island. Investigators at the Meinig School, Cornell Tech and Weill Cornell Medicine are now collaborating to advance scientific discovery - Pete's enduring legacy. He was an inspiration to us all, and we are honored and grateful to have enjoyed his friendship, support and counsel.
