Peter Mura Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Jun. 9 to Jun. 10, 2009.
MURA Peter "Pappy" Sr. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Mura Sr., age 73. Beloved husband to Jeannie Mura, and parent to Stephen, Marco, Peter Jr., Melissa , and Glenn, he died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Deep Cove on the morning of June 5th. Predeceased by his brother Alberto, he is survived by his siblings Margarita, Lucciana, Irena, Graziella, and Gian-Franco. An emigrant from Ponteba, Italy due to WWII, he moved to Canada, and made his mark as a successful businessman, eventually becoming President of Purolator Europe (based in Paris, France), and then (in order to move his family back to Canada) Vice President of Loomis. He then went on to follow his life-long passion as a chef and restauranteur. He was the owner/operator of the Creek House Restaurant in Whistler, BC and then the Cafe? Galleria in Yaletown. His catering business served some very memorable Lower Mainland functions. A big man who made a bigger impression, he had the ability to turn a minor meal into a memorable event. The weekly Sunday dinners at "Pappy's" home became legendary and an invitation was regarded as an honour and privilege. The conversations and laughter that took place during those dinners are already regarded as classics. An avid winemaker and collector, he eventually realized his dream of building his "Cantina"... a place to store his wine and invite his closest friends and family for a casual bottle of wine, some antipasti, music, and a good story. A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, June 11, 2009, 2:00pm until 5:00pm at the Canoe Club, 501 Klahanie Drive, Port Moody. Service at 2:30pm. There will be some food, but probably not as good as Pappy's.

It's tough not to smile when I think of my godfather. He was always the life of the party and I will miss him so much. I am so happy that I reconnected with the Mura's in the past couple years. It really helped me feel close to my Italian side since I am so far away from that. I just wish I had seen you more recently. Thanks for always offering that one last glass of wine. I will miss you.
Love from your godson.

Our sincere condolences to all of Peter Mura's family, many of whom we have been lucky enough to come to know over the years. Our dear friend Stephen has included us in many family events where we spent time with Peter & Jeannie. He was 'larger than life' and he loved his family and was loved by his family very much! He will be missed! Our prayers and our love go out to all his family.

Jeannie and Stephen,
I would like to express my sincere condolences on the recent passing of Peter. My thoughts and prayers to you and your family at this difficult time.

Although I didn't know your dad that well, on the half dozen or so times that I met with him over the years, especially at Cafe Galleria which he shared with our good friend Jean Jacques Coirier,I came to realize his great kindness towards his friends and especially his love of family. Peter was very highly respected throughout this "foodies" community.

You were truly fortunate to have a man such as Peter in your life, although no comfort is quite enough to replace your loss please accept and pass on to the rest of your family my deepest sympathies.
Ginette Bertrand, Vancouver

Very sincerely,

Peter Mura has been our next door neighbour for the past 3 1/2 years. We consider ourselves privileged to have lived next door to the Mura's. We shared many morning hello's with Peter as he was out watering his plants and getting started with his day, and then upon returning home from work, we often saw Peter and Jeannie sharing a meal on their patio. This is probably what we will miss the most. His great big smile and cheerful hello! There is more...we traded recipes on a weekly basis, well mostly Peter sharing some of his culinary secrets with me, but we had the love of freshly prepared good food in common. We also traded herbs, he gave us pesto by the jar fulls, salmon, blueberries...he would pick up veggies for us from the farm, and sometimes when we were late getting home from work, he would bring us dinner.
Our two year old daughter Lily was very fond of Peter. He fed her grapes and blueberries, treated her like a princess and had a prime seat for her on his lap! Lily was always looking for Peter when we would pass by on our way home from a walk. They were good friends. Interesting that since Peter has passed away, Lily hasn't asked for him, or even looked to find him. I guess she knows his spirit will live on in our hearts. My husband Scott helped Peter with his Catina, and also shared a few glasses of wine and antipasti in there with him. Peter was so happy with his workshop! Soon we were invited to Sunday family dinners, if someone couldn't make it and there was a couple extra seats at the table, Jeannie or Peter would call to invite us over! I could go on! We really made the most of our 3 1/2 years as neighbours. We miss Peter dearly. To Jeannie and the kids and grandchildren...Please accept our most heart felt condolences. Love and Light, Jennie, Scott and Lily Weisenburger
