My father loved Italy. Some of my best memories as a child were of our beach vacations to Lignano. Dad would get deli sandwiches, we would be on rafts in the water, driving electric cars that required putting Lira into them to continue driving. His mother Emilia would join us, always giving us coins for those awesome electric cars ....then the road trip to Florence and Rome, seeing the mighty colosseum , riding in horse carriages all before heading back to Germany.
He loved to take us ice skating and a favorite memory was dad whizzing around a lake near Concord that had black ice. He also loved to go to hockey and baseball games . How he loved the track! His parents often took him to Suffolk Downs. Of course in the 1930's the horses and boxing were the two top pastimes in America! I always looked forward to talkng to him about the Triple Crown races, the jockeys, trainers and the history of great horses from his time. I would like to imagine he is playing the ponies, watching the Braves like it was 1943 again and hanging out with his parents, extended family and my beloved mother. Love you dad. I
MY FATHER! That is how I always greeted him.
