1954-2015
Peter J. Van Tassel of Tallahassee, FL ended his courageous 20-year battle with cancer at his residence when he went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 4, 2015.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 3:30 pm on Thursday, June 11, 2015 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 624 Miccosukee Rd., Tallahassee, FL 32308.
Peter was born on January 27, 1954 in Warren, PA to the late Margorie Ellen Steffy and Everell Earnest (Ted) Van Tassel.
The oldest of 5 siblings, Peter grew up in Indianapolis, IN, graduated from Bishop Byrne High School in Memphis, TN and attended Memphis State University. For the past 31 years he lived in Tallahassee. Peter enjoyed Gator & Notre Dame football, reading, golfing and fishing. On May 6, 2010 he married the greatest catch of his life, his best friend of 26 years, SherryAnn Clemons, also of Tallahassee. Prior to his declining health, Peter worked at Firehouse Subs #3 in Tallahassee for 10 years. Even during his last days, and although his body was so frail, Peter still enjoyed shopping and devoting his time with various arts, crafts and other projects.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife SherryAnn Clemons; step-sons Shane Clemons (Hailey) and Spencer Clemons, both of Tallahassee, FL; siblings Kathleen Hill (Robert) of Memphis, TN, Elizabeth "Ellen" Van Tassel of Panacea, FL, Christine (Marty) Thomas of Saratoga, WY and Paul Van Tassel of Olive Branch, MS; mother-in-law Virginia Lawson of Fort Walton Beach, FL; sister-in-law Karen (Paul) McAfee of Destin, FL; step-grandkids Dakota & Emily Clemons of Tallahassee, FL; and a host of extended family along with his pet dog, Pedro.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in his memory.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. I was in first, second, and perhaps third grade with Peter at St Michael's School in Indianapolis Indiana. I came across his obituary while trying to find contact information for classmates for a possible class reunion. I think Peter and I were probably the shortest children in our class.

You were a man that refused to allow cancer to steal your dignity. After your treatments and surgeries you continued to visit other cancer patients giving your support.
