Pete's kindness, dedication, and that twinkle in his eye helped all students and staff feel welcomed at Clinton Elementary. It was an honor to work with him and to share a friendship between our young families. I will always remember his many smiles and how he made life fun.

Pete was a big part of my familys lifes, as well as many youth in Clinton and SAD 49, took the time to mentor many, it came out of his passion to teach and coach, he always went the extra yard, he just cared, enjoyed playing ball for him being one of his students, and his friend
RIP Coach

I had the pleasure of meeting Pete in September of 1982. I accepted a French teaching position in Fairfield along with 3 classes a week in Clinton. The first time I walked into Pete's classroom and introduced myself as the French teacher, I could actually hear a sigh of relief. He told me that he spent more hours preparing his French lessons than he did for his other classes. I felt like I was coming to his rescue. I only stressed him out once during my visits to Clinton. One afternoon, I left the class with 2 grade books. He was glad to hear that I had them in my possession. Pete was a wonderful man with a great sense of humor. He had a smile for everyone. He was well liked and respected by the many students he taught and mentored, and by all of us who had the pleasure of working with him. Pete will be missed! My deepest condolences to Marie and the family.

I first met Pete 46 years ago when I started my teaching career at Clinton Elementary School. I looked up to him as a role model because of his passion to teach and the respect he commanded from both students and staff. I came to know him better during carpools to work when he and Marie lived in Winslow near Faye and me. He had a great sense of humor and was always willing to lend a hand. I have many fond memories from the years I knew and worked with both Pete and Marie. (Even from when I had a side business and was hired to clean their new home in Clinton!)

When Pete decided to step down as the Lawrence Jr. High baseball coach, he asked me to take over for him. I cannot express the pride I felt having a man with the class and integrity like Pete asking me to follow him. I am honored still. I cherish our many talks about baseball and I will miss him greatly. My condolences to Marie and family.

I'm so sorry to see this obituary. I had Mr Viles in 6th or 7th grade...not sure which. He was a nice man, a great teacher and I hope he had a great life in retirement....he deserves it after having us in school.

I loved those years teaming with Pete, especially his devotion to our little tv studio. It was so easy to see how much he loved the students, and how he was willing to go the extra mile for them.

There are so many wonderful things I remember about Mr. Viles, I mean Coach, I mean Pete. See, I knew Pete since I was in 5th grade ish. He was my teacher, my baseball coach, my mentor as a member of the LEO Club,my coaching colleague, but most of all he was my friend. I learned a great deal from him. One great takeaway was how he taught Life lessons through athletics. I will miss you my friend.

I first met Pete when I went to prep my room in the Clinton Baker St. School (no longer in existence) to start my first year of teaching, I was given a warm welcome and the offer to help in any way he could, and he was a person of his word. Support was always there and that extended through our friendship of 47 years which was filled with laughter and, yes, frequent shaking of my head because he could be so stubborn. I will treasure the memories I have of Pete of which I have many.
