Philip Azar Obituary

Published by Houston Chronicle on Aug. 29, 2019.
Philip H. Azar II
1951-2019
Philip H. Azar II, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2019 at the age of 68, in Houston, Texas. Philip was a native of Columbus, Ohio. After graduating from The University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Business Administration with honors, Philip attended South Texas College of Law, where he obtained his Doctor of Jurisprudence. He was also a former president of the Delta Theta Phi.
Philip was a prominent Houston attorney and the former owner of the Historical Kirby Mansion. He was best known for hosting various charitable events, fundraisers and elaborate parties.
Poem written by Philip:
"DAD IS STILL HERE"
I see DAD in the way DIANE shades her wisdom with jokes;
I see DAD in DILORES' dreams and ideas;
I see DAD in the way DOLLY resembles his ethnic mannerisms;
I see DAD in MIKE'S integrity and easy going nature;
I see DAD in MARK'S playful charisma;
I see DAD in JIMMY'S brave heart of gold;
I see DAD in the way BOBBY welcomes a stranger; and
I see DAD every time I need to get out of a jam.
He had a heart of gold and was always generous. He was thoughtful and gracious to everyone regardless of their status in life.
He will always be remembered as the Godfather to all.
Philip was loved and respected by many and survived by his family and friends.
The Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 31, 2019 at Our Lady of the Cedars Maronite Catholic Church located at 11935 Bellfort Village, Houston, Texas 77031. Rosary begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by the funeral mass at 11:00 am. A reception will follow after the mass. I'm just now learning of Phil's passing.
I moved away from Houston long ago. But when I lived there, graduated from law school and started my law practice, he allowed me to office in the Kirby Mansion for free, for two years. I was a new lawyer. He taught me things they don't teach in law school, introduced me to experienced and seasoned lawyers, and "showed me the ropes" in so many ways. This generosity was a carry over from our casual friendship even before law school and the career that followed. I have very fond memories of him, and celebrate that he lived and that I knew him.

I knew Phillip growing up in Columbus, he was my best friend Mikes brother who passed before him. I remember Mr Azar the father of Mike and Phillip from the Pizza place they ran on the West side of Columbus, I worked at their Pizza place after Mr Azar passed away. We were friends from the neighborhood I grew up in, my father passed away around the same time my friend Mikes passed away, his father was lebanese and his mother was dutch, my mother was lebanese and my father was dutch. We loved the food. The Lebanese food. I remember Phillip was always teasing his brothers and sisters, he would wink at them if they were not in on the joke, he was a master of teasers. I remember the Azars had a big family and they all took care of their mother after their father died. I miss those days, I was just a small boy in the elementary school and after I graduated from high school me and Mike moved to California, Phillip met us in San Diego and the last time I saw him we were all swimming in the Ocean off La Jolla. Time goes so fast, now everything is just a memory. Both my best friend and his big brother are together again, hope to see everyone again in the great world beyond. God bless the Azar's my great friends from my youth.

One for all and all in one heart.
Big is his heart, bigger than an ocean.
That fits all human kind and embraces their emotions.
He holds them tight and carry their worries,
Laughing high and dancing around.
Floating, dreaming with every motion.
Laugher fills the air and happiness everywhere.
A hope is born again and the dance will remain.
For you the sky will stay blue and never gray.
For your name will never pass away.

Dear amo Phil, I first want to thank you for being such a positive influence and a blessing in my life. you are the reason I am the way I am today. I want to share how you influed my life.

You were always there for me even when I did not ask. I remember when you took me to Dallas just for my America's got Talent audition even though you felt pain in your leg, because you knew how much it meant to me and were willing to sacrifice your comfort to show your care for me, despite the outcome of my audition. I remember when you came with flowers to my spring show that lasted 2 hours just to watch me sing for 3 minutes. You sought talent in me more than anyone could, and encouraged me to follow my dreams no matter the risk. Once I told you: amo I hope I could be as successful as you one day, and you said: with your determination, you will. Thank you for believing in me when I did not believe in myself.

You were an inspiration to me. You grew up unaided and made a life for yourself. You juggled working a side job while getting exceptional grades in college and law school. You were self motivated and lived above your expectations. You are the reason I want to become a lawyer, and you are the reason I remind myself everyday that I can achieve whatever it is that I desire, no matter the conflicts.

You put family first. I could tell that Materials meant nothing to you compared to the importance of the happiness around you. When you were in stressful situations, you never hesitated to see my family and especially me. You made sure I was coming and I was getting the first hug. When we were with our families, you made sure everybody around you had a smile on their face before you could feel content. Your love for family, and utilitarianism was truly inspiring.

You cherish the small moments in life for a life time. You always share the story when I was too small to reach a coat from my closet, and you came and got it for me, or when I was crying in my dads lap but wasn't in yours. You remind me that I am worth more than I think I am at times. Thank you for caring so much about me when I couldn't myself.

Amo is a second father to me and will truly be missed. However, I know he will look down on me from heaven throughout my life and will be there for all my accomplishments, because I owe it to him to live a good life. I know I will miss the birthday dinners and the voice notes from him, but as he would tell me: everything is under gods will. Thank you for all your care, I love you so much. I did not want to have to go through my journey without you, but in the mean time, you will be missed, amo.

Getting to know Phil was a blessing. He was a wonderful attorney and an even better friend. He truly enjoyed helping people, and would go out of his way to do to kind things for others.

He was also hilarious. He was full of great stories, and I'll definitely miss those impromptu lunches at the Kirby Mansion. He was definitely one of a kind and will be missed.

On Saturday, August 31, we lay to rest our dear friend, Phil Azar, an excellent attorney, a highly successful entrepreneur and most importantly to Phil, a loving family man.
Phil's family holiday gatherings were straight out of a Norman Rockwell painting and I was privileged to be included.
Phil is one of the best friends of my life and he is loved by my family and several members of my firm over the decades of our friendship.
We shared triumph in our victories, tears in our losses and laughter in the memories of it all. Those memories live on.

Love you Brother. God Speed.

I met Phil in 1992, we started to restore the Kirby Mansion and a great friendship was also started. Phil taught me how to be a better person, Phil was a very generous, kind, and loving brother to me, and my family. I will miss his heart of gold, his sense of humor, and his friendship. One of my memories of Phil's kindness was when he picked up my new born kids in a limo from the hospital. I love you Phil, I WILL MISS YOU!

I met Phil in 1992 and we started a friendship shortly after meeting each other. He was a true friend and will miss him dearly. We shared so many funny stories and he was constantly laughing so I know he is laughing as he is in God's hands right now. He touched my life in so many ways especially helping me with the introduction of my wife Paula who is the love of my life. Thanks Phil for all you did for me, my wife, Ross, Hunter as we all looked up to you and cherished your friendship. Wish you were still here but we will meet again.RIP Buddy.

It is with a sad heart that I learned about our dear brother and past Dean Phil Azar's passing. He was a great guy who was tremendously gracious and generous to our Delta Theta Law Fraternity and its members. He hosted many events at the Kirby mansion for Delta Theta Phi Law Fraternity over the years, being very active and responsive to requests by the fraternity, and having a record number of initiates when he was Dean of the EE Townes Senate at South Texas College of Law. He is missed greatly. Please join me and keep Phil and his family in our prayers.
