Philip DUNHAM Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Mar. 8 to Mar. 9, 2014.
DUNHAM, Philip Morton
Passed away peacefully on March 4th, 2014 surrounded by loved ones at Royal Columbian Hospital after a tragic accident while vacationing in California. Phil was born on July 18th, 1942 to Vernon and Phyllis Dunham (predeceased) in Vancouver. A true family man, Phil is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 45 years, Carol Ann, son and fishing partner Perry, daughter Leanne and fiancé Andrew Abbott, and cherished Granddaughter Taneisha. He will be missed greatly by Sister Sue Digney, Sister-in-Law Marilyn and Brother-in-Law Harvey Hargitt, Nephews Boyd and Daryl Hargitt, Nieces Chelsea and Jessica Digney, Great- Nephews Avery and Eric Hargitt and their mother Kristin Nelson, Great Nephew Maxim Hargitt, endeared cousin Steve Lucas, and numerous other relatives and family friends. He was in his 53rd year of employment with BC Hydro and he took pride and enjoyment in his work. Phil had a zest for life. Much of his time was spent fishing, camping, cycling, cruising, playing board games, cards and reading. He also enjoyed time with his canine friends Tyla, Tuco and Tula. But most of all, time spent with family and friends was his priority. A man of few words, he was a people person and was loved by all. We are so fortunate to have our wonderful memories of him. He was our Gentle Giant. A Celebration of his Life will be take place on Saturday, April 5th at Fraserview Village Hall, 22610 116th Avenue in Maple Ridge at 2:00 pm . In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to The Salvation Army, Ronald McDonald House Vancouver, or an animal shelter of your choice.

Phil and I go back 50 or 60 years. My father, Walt, worked with his dad Vern at Ruskin. I am so sorry to hear of his accident. It certainly is a tragic loss. Our thoughts are with you. So sorry to have missed his service, but I only heard of his passing today.

I remember Phil as a man who was always willing to give a helping hand and never said an unkind word about anyone. I am so fortunate to have had him as my very close friend for over 40 years including great times in the outdoors while fishing and hunting and also camping and traveling with him and Carol.

My thoughts are with you all at this time. The loss of such a wonderful person is difficult. I have nothing but warm memories of Phil. The best visual I have is of Niki when she was a year old rubbing her check against his beard.

Such a gentle man who will be missed by so many people who had the pleasure of knowing him. When he smiled his whole face lit up and his eyes sparkled especially when speaking about his family. The stars in the sky will shine brighter now that there's a new angel watching over us. Our deepest sympathy to all of the family.
