BARNSTEAD, N.H. — Philip James "Chickie" Grillo Sr., 61, of 497 South Barnstead Road, died at his home Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009 of natural causes.
He was born July 3, 1948 in Lawrence. the son of Charles and Josephine Grillo. He was educated in Lawrence schools and was a graduate of Lawrence Technical High School in 1966. He held track records at the Tech for many years. He was an Army Veteran of the Vietnam War serving from 1966 to 1969 when he was honorably discharged. He was married to Katherine (Bunce) in St. Monica's Church in Methuen Jan. 11, 1969. He was employed as a tool and die maker by Lucent Technologies in North Andover, for over 30 years, retiring in 1999. He was an active member of St. Basil's Christian community where he served as an Eucharistic minister. He was the chairman of the Annual Chirstmas Fair and served in the cursillo ministry for many years. He moved to New Hampshire in 1997 and has been a Barnstead resident since 2005. He had served as a Selectman since 2008, and served on several committees in town. His goal was to be the voice of the people and to extend compassion and fairness to those who needed it most. He was always offering a kind word or funny antidote in any difficult situation.
As an example of his compassion, and a long serving community commitment, he led an effort to restore vandalized headstones in a cemetery in Lawrence, in the 1970s. Many of those affected were elderly and unable to pay. The event was chronicled in the Lawrence Eagle Tribune and that spurred many benefactors to contribute to the effort. He was an avid golfer and handyman, but he devoted most of his time to his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Katherine (Bunce) Grillo of Barnstead; a son, Philip J. Grillo Jr and his wife Heidi of Chichester. 3 Daughters, Lori Nolin and husband Tom of Chichester, Kerri Grillo-Berard and husband Jeff of Lowell, and Ellen Grillo-Moore and Dan Moore of Barnstead; five grandchildren, Laci Grillo, Juliana, Abagale and Jeffrey Grillo-Moore and Tyler Nolin; a brother, Charles Grillo Jr of Ft. Kathy, Kerri, Ellen, Lori, and Jay--My thoughts are with all of you during this time. Although I haven't seen you all in many years, I will always remember the times at your house in Methuen when we were younger. I know that the wonderful memories of your dad will be with all of us always.

Phil Grillo was a great man. When he came into my life, both my and my wife's fathers had already paased, so our children had no grandfather. Phil became Grampy Phil to them. He and Kathy wlecomed us into their family fold, because that is what Christian Brothers and Sisters do is what he would say. If you were ever in a pinch, pickle or bind, Phil was always there to help. He was a great friend and I will miss him.

Kathy, we are by your side during this time of grief. Trish and I have been so saddened by the passing of Chick that there are not words that can be written that will give the comfort we all need. He was the best man at my wedding 25 years ago, a great cousin, and a best friend. We'll always cherish that last conversation in the driveway at Lori and Tom's a few months ago. Our hug goodbye that day will have to last until we meet again. And to you Chick, I love you man!

Chick was my father in-law but he was more like a best buddy to me. We enjoyed many sunny days on the golf course together. He also loved the beach playing with the kids or sitting around a camp fire making smores. We vacationed together many times and enjoyed an occasional trip to Foxwoods. He was the kind of guy that was always there for you and he put others before himself. There are so many thing I will miss. I enjoyed his company and loved him very much!!!

Kathy and Family,
No matter how in my adult years I try to call him Phil, he will always be "Chicky" to me. He truly gave of himself in life. He let God lead him and consequently he was instrumental in leading others to God. This certainly is true for me as both Chicky and Kathy sponsored me in Cursillo--one of the greatest gifts I could ever receive. Praise God!
I have been remembering those many years growing up we spent at Auntie Jo's and Uncle Charlie's for so many events and holidays; and, who will ever forget the message of Merry Christmas on the house at Fern Street!
The sadness of his loss can only be borne by the promise of the "good news" that one day we will see each other again in the presence of our Lord.
His legacy lives on in the lives of those he touched.
Much love,
Chris
