Philip Hauk Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 12, 2011.
HAUK, Philip (Phil)
1918 - 2011
Philip Wm. Hauk died peacefully at Father Lacombe Care Centre on August 9, 2011. Phil was born to Ludwig and Rosalia Hauk on January 1, 1918. Phil is survived by his loving and treasured wife of seventy-one years, Helen (Engel). Those who lovingly remember Phil include his brother, Tony Hauk; children: Jerome Hauk, Marguerite Denis, Marilyn McCulloch and Michaelle Fikowski; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving Phil are Steve Fikowski, Jamie Beckstead, Brian Denis, Marie Hauk and numerous nieces and nephews. Phil was predeceased by an infant first born son, Philip Jerome; daughter Mora Louise Hauk- Beckstead (survived by Jamie) and son-in- law Peter McCulloch. Phil grew up on the family farm near Prelate, SK, later attending Notre Dame College, Wilcox, SK, and St. Charles College, North Battleford, SK. Phil's teaching years were spent at Saskatchewan country schools and later Abbey and Fox Valley where he retired as school Principal in 1975. Phil often spoke of and fondly remembered his many students through the decades of being an educator, especially In Fox Valley. Phil was a dedicated and tireless community builder. He was instrumental in establishing funding for the Senior Drop-in Centre and Meals on Wheels in Fox Valley. Phil was also very involved in Parks and Recreation, the Knights of Columbus and St. Mary's Parish in Fox Valley. After living in Fox Valley for thirty-two years, Phil and Helen moved to Regina in 1983. Phil always enjoyed and was talented with gardening, woodworking and athletics, especially baseball and bowling. Phil was a member of the Volksliederchor Harmonie (German Choir) and enjoyed participating in the numerous activities. In 2002 Helen and Phil relocated to Calgary, AB. While living in Calgary, Phil continued to be active in bowling (Bowlarama, Chinook Seniors League), card playing, the Knights of Columbus and St. Patrick's Parish. With Phil's declining health, he moved to Father Lacombe Care Centre in March of 2008. While there, Phil still enjoyed playing Bingo, singing, attending Mass, making new friends and following his beloved Rough Riders and Blue Jays (still critiquing their plays). Special thanks to all the compassionate caregivers at FLCC, the Sisters of Providence, We Care staff and all who visited Phil. The family appreciates the kind assistance of Father Andrew Maruszczak SDS. Special acknowledgement to son-in-law, Steve Fikowski, for his quiet dedication. In lieu of flowers, donations in Phil's name would be appreciated to the Sisters of Providence (316 - 146 Avenue S.E., Calgary, Alberta, T2X 2A3). Prayer Service will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church (1414 Shawnessy Boulevard S.W., Calgary, AB) on Sunday, August 14, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Monday, August 15, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. To email expressions of sympathy: [email protected] Subject heading: Phil Hauk. I would like to extend sympathy to the family on the passing of Phil Hauk. His smile in the picture in the obituary is exactly as I remember him. He was a very community minded person, and good role model. (Helen taught me Grade 3, and Marguerite Grade 5.)
With thoughts and prayers,

Hi Helen and family,
We haven't ben in touch for years, unfortunatley. However, we would like to express our sincere condolences on Phils passing. He was one of the best teachers I ever had while he was in Abbey and will not be forgotten for the coaching and support he gave to all his students. The trees he
spearheaded the planting of in our Village are still a lasting legacy.

I would like to send my deepest sympathy to the family of Philip Hauk. I always enjoyed the hospitality that was given to me by Mr.and Mrs. Hauk.
They were so kind and generous of their time. I marveled at how active Phil was and how he enjoyed the many activities he was involved in while in Regina.
I missed this couple very much when they moved to Calgary.
You are in my thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.
love Margaret A

Hi Dad, (PAPA)
This is your Chatterbox checking in to let you know how much I miss you. You taught me a lot of things Dad -- from planting trees with you at the park or Ball Diamond in Fox Valley,on the Hauk Farm as well, gardening, how to throw & catch a softball, your musical talent in playing the banjo & harmonica, your love of music and Mom's wonderful home-cooked food & homemade bread, chocolate, ice cream & all things "green" -- that being your favorite color. Your dry wit that taught me it was okay to laugh & be silly. I loved singing with you. I loved how much you enJOYed an A & W Root Beer Float, A Saskatchewn Red Eye on a warm summer's day. I admired how athletic & competitive your were & that included playing cards.I will always remember watching Hockey Night in Canada with you -- popcorn ready -- watching the Roughriders -- popcorn ready & yes, you did critique the plays & were usually right. I know it has been difficult on you these past few years - for you were so athletic, involved & active. I enJOYEd watching football, baseball, golfing, poker & tennis with you at FLCC.I enJOYEd our conversations there as well -- reading you The Leader Post, Fox Valley News, always wanting to be kept informed & that was great, Dad! We will take great care of Mom -- your precious Helen, whom you adored & were so proud of. Dad, I was proud of you. A kind & good man, who tried his best. I miss you, Dad & hold our memories close to my heart. As the McCulloch's would comment --"See you later" -- in the meantime, Dad, please give huge hugs to my Peter, Mora Louise & our Philip Jerome. I have no doubt you are already playing the banjo & harmonica, adding your special touch to the Heavenly Choir!
Love you forever Dad & Thanks for everything,
Your Chatterbox -- Marilyn Ann XOXO

I will always remember Mr. Hauk's positive demeanor, his love of school sports, and his dedication to the profession of teaching. What I remember most is the way he always walked with a quick pace, and a definite purpose, on his way to make life better for everyone. My sincere condolences and fond memories are with the family at this time.
