Philip ISRAEL Obituary

Published by Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Jul. 30, 2019.
ISRAEL, Philip Z. Philip Z. Israel, beloved Surgical On-cologist and source of strength and comfort to the tens of thousands of breast cancer patients he cared for, passed away Friday, July 26, 2019 at the age of 83. Born in 1936 in the tiny southern town of Edison, Georgia, he graduated from high school with a class of 12 students. From childhood, Dr. Israel knew with certainty that he wanted to be a doctor. A graduate of Emory University Medical School, Dr. Israel also did his surgical residency there. He served as a Captain in the US Air Force in Fort Worth, Texas in 1966-68. A pioneer in the development of oncologic breast surgery as a specialty, Dr. Israel trained thousands of surgeons to develop skill in ultrasound and stereotactic imagining so that they could more comprehensively care for their patients. As a skilled surgeon, his aim was always to treat his patients kindly, gently and appropriately - never unnecessarily over treating them. He authored a number of scholarly research studies on breast cancer published in prominent medical journals. He was proud to have been one of the founding members and the first Chairman of the Board of the American Society of Breast Surgeons in 1990. Dr. Israel had a great love of Colorado and the landscape of the American west. He was a firm believer that a gentleman's word and handshake meant everything. To those who knew him, he was a true southern gentleman and the salt of the earth. To his patients, who cared deeply for him, his impact on their lives will continue to ripple on through time. He will be remembered fondly by all whose lives he touched as a great and exceptional man. Dr. Israel was preceded in death by his beloved son, David Israel; parents, William and Dorothy Baer Israel and nephew, Jared Zane Israel. He is survived by his wife, Cyndi; brother, Jack (Diane) of Sandy Springs, former wife, Faye; daughter, Terri Israel of Marietta; son, Scott Israel (Laura); and cherished grandchildren, Zach and Maddie Israel of Chattanooga; step grandchildren, Madison and Toby Thurwanger; step children, Kimberly and Kenny Thurwanger. A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, August 1st at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home, Historic Marietta Chapel. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Breezy Meadow Horse Rescue, 390 Narrow Way Church Circle, Dallas, GA 30132 or the animal rescue organization of your choice. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Thursday.

My own personal condolences to the family of one of our own heroes, Dr. Philip Z. Israel. I credit Dr. Israel with Gayle still being with us, because it was he who was tenacious enough to stay after what he was unsure about when it came to her cancer. He stayed and stayed and stayed after something inside his brain that something wasn't quite right with Gayle's mammogram - and he turned out to be right, early enough to be able to treat it and make Gayle a survivor. This at the age of 70, when many doctors are already long retired. This was a man who could not rest until he helped as many patients as possible. God will surely welcome Dr. Israel into His Kingdom. R.I.P. Dr. Philip Israel.

I've been a patient of Dr. Israel since 2004 and he's responsible for me being here today. He was such a thorough and proactive doctor and caught my breast cancer in the early stage in 2006 and got me through the chemotherapy and radiation treatments along with my other doctors. He was always so kind and caring and very complete in his explanations of what was going on and what to expect. I am so sorry to hear of his passing and will forever keep him in my prayers.

Dr Israel idealized what we as physicians should desire to be; compassionate, honest and respectful. He represented all of which is noble in our profession; knowledgeable and for ever a student, and always placing a patient's best interest first.

Dr. Phil really helped when Issie Fineroff was diagnosed with having brain cancer and after Dr Phil examined him it turned out to be pinpoint strokes we were able to stop kemo therapy from ever starting and Issie lived to 97

I was one of the last fortunate women to be blessed to have Dr Israel in my corner. I remember the first time I met him and learned how he was fighting his own cancer battle but still remained adamant to see me through my journey. I would pass him in hallways of the oncologist office as we were going through chemo at the same time and he would joke about who's hair would go first and who's would come back better he was an amazing doctor and more importantly an amazing and kind person whom I will forever be grateful I had the privilege to come to know! This man truly never stopped fighting for me and I believe now and always he is why I'm alive! He knew what to do and not to waste time doing it, he told me then he hand picked his surgeons at the clinic and I can attest that he truly sent me to the best. I will forever be thankful and grateful for Dr Israel and the amazing way he touched my life and so many others. Rest In Peace sweet man

To Phil's family,
I knew Phil when he was a student at Emory and later when he lived at the Four Seasons Apartments. We will remember his sense of humor and his down to earth personality also his intelligence. Everyone should be proud to have known this wonderful man.

I was a patient of Dr. Israel's for many, many years he actually did my last breast cancer surgery less than 5 years ago. He was always very thorough watched after me for years as he did many women. Always extremely careful with all his breast cancer patients. I am thankful that you cared so much for our health. You will be missed. Rest in peace.

A very kind and skilled surgeon who cared deeply for His patients and was compassionate to all who knew him. Was respectful and patient, took time to explain procedures to pt and family. Drs Dillenger, Israel, and King were part of a Surgical practice when I knew them at Smyrna Hospital, 1981-1995, and there after when working with WellStar Health System.
He was well known for his advances in the field of Breast Cancer early diagnosis, treatment, and limited surgical intervention in contrast to the radical surgery that for so long was considered the standard of practice.

He will be greatly missed by his family, collegues, associates and friends.
Our hope is that his memory for good and the contribution he made in relieving suffering and the great impact on so many lives will continue to be seen and felt by the 1000's of people he touched and affected over all the years of his service in Cobb County, Georgia, and the rippling affect felt around the States and the world!
