POCOCK, Philip John
Deceased on Saturday, November 7, 2015, peacefully at The Glebe Centre in Ottawa.
Born February 19, 1925 in London, Ontario, Philip was the only child of Marjorie Elinor Cook of Sarnia, Ontario, and Philip John Pocock Senior of London, Ontario.
Loving father to Kate (Glenn Sacks), Sheila (Brent MacDonald), Philip, Tessa, Valerie (Ayman Behiery) and Joanna (Jason Massot); proud grandfather of Will, Dustin, Natalie, Emily, Kate, Jessica, Timothy, Eve, Antonia, Rubin; and great- grandfather to Christian and Edward. Predeceased by daughter, Mary (Marcus Schubert).
After one year at the University of Western Ontario, Philip studied at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He took a job at Ottawa's National Research Council, where he worked as head of the Low Speed Aerodynamics Laboratory, testing airlines in the NRC Wind Tunnel. He met his wife, Jasmine Jackson (deceased) in the Library there and they married in 1950. Philip eagerly passed on his love of food, wine, books, music, photography and travel to his children and grandchildren.
Exceptionally interested in photography, he designed a compact darkroom for their unique mid-century modern home. Here, he spent many hours, often with a child sitting on a stool beside him. Philip orchestrated a job for Expo '67 in Montreal where he was Project Director for the International Photography exhibit, 'The Camera as Witness.' He then became Director of Research for the Senate Committee on Science Policy and travelled widely to lecture and teach on science, on the future, and on photography.
Philip was an early adopter of the computer, writing to friends and colleagues about science, philosophy, literature, Ireland and his many other interests. Friends will remember him best, however, for his extensive library, and for having a camera always at the ready, delighting in photographing people and the world around him.
Friends are invited to visit the Beechwood National Memorial Centre, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa on Thursday, November 12th, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Funeral mass will be held on Friday, November 13th at Blessed Sacrament Church, 94 Fourth Avenue, Ottawa at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be held at a later date in St. Peter's Cemetery, London.
Heartfelt thanks to sitters Jennifer and Denise, and the attentive and caring staff at The Glebe Centre.
In lieu of flowers, Philip would probably advise you to pick up a book, go for a walk with your camera, listen to music, or just DO something 'useful, constructive, or productive' for you, your friends, or for the world at large.
