Philip Vargus Obituary

Mr. Philip Thomas Vargus, a lifetime resident of Rockland, a retired supermarket executive, died Monday, March 8, 2010 at Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston. He was 83. He died peacefully after a brief illness surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Vargus served in the Army during WWII. He was the Treasurer and Vice President at Tedeschis Food Shops and Angelos Supermarkets; he served as a director at local banks, Board of Directors of Rockland Chamber of Commerce, Man of the Year from the Rockland Chamber of Commerce, Treasurer for the St. Vincent de Paul Society at Holy Family Church, Inductee of the Rockland High School Academic Hall of Fame, he was a Graduate of Bentley College, Regional volunteer for SERVE New England (formerly Share Food Bank Program), he was very active at Holy Family Church and School and was a daily communicant, he was instrumental in initiating the school lunch program at Holy Family School, was a member of the Holy Family School and the Rockland Housing Foundation. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Eleanor (Goulding) Vargus, two daughters, Julie Fisher and her husband Paul of Needham and Mary Beth Sarkissian and her husband Leo of Walpole, 2 sons, Peter Vargus and his wife Karen of Danville CA and Paul Vargus and his wife Ruthanne of East Bridgewater. Also survived by his 8 beloved grandchildren, his sister-in-law Pauline Young and her husband Ralph of West Roxbury, many loving nieces, nephews and his cousins, the McKenna Family. Visiting hours was in the Sullivan Funeral Home, 45 East Water St. in ROCKLAND on Thursday, March 11, from 4 - 8 p.m. Funeral Mass was on Friday, March 12, at 9 a.m. in Holy Family Church, 403 Union St. in Rockland. Interment in Holy Family Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Phils memory may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, 403 Union St., Rockland MA 02370.
