Philippe Gaulier

Philippe Gaulier, the French master clown and influential theatre teacher whose exacting classes shaped generations of actors and comedians, died February 9, 2026. He died of complications from a lung infection at the age of 82.

Gaulier was born in Paris on March 4, 1943, during the German occupation. He initially trained to be a dramatic actor, when he found that when he attempted a serious performance, his classmates laughed. So he turned his attention to comedy, studying with the influential teacher Jacques Lecoq, whose approach emphasized masks, improvisation, and physical play.

In 1980 in Paris, he founded École Philippe Gaulier, a school that became a destination for performers seeking rigorous training in clown, bouffon, and acting craft. Former students included Sacha Baron Cohen, Emma Thompson, Helena Bonham Carter, Rachel Weisz, and Geoffrey Rush.

As a performer, Gaulier became known in France in the 1970s, including work connected to the show "Les Assiettes," remembered for its plate-smashing routine. His teaching style, admired and feared, featured frequent insults toward his students. Initially disarmed and upset by his cruelty, his students found that it ultimately liberated them and allowed them to discover new heights in their performing abilities.

Tributes after his death focused on the way he pushed students toward spontaneity and honest connection with audiences. In a tribute reported by The Guardian, Sacha Baron Cohen, a former student, said Gaulier's instruction was the key to his iconoclastic comedy style. Cohen noted that Gaulier "believed in me" and "armed me with techniques that still get me into trouble."

Gaulier suffered a stroke in 2023 and retired from full-time teaching afterward. He is survived by his wife, Michiko Miyazaki Gaulier, who has been involved in running the school.

Funeral arrangements released by the school said a service is scheduled for February 18, 2026, at Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.
