Phillip Cook Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 13, 2025.
Phillip Carl "Phil" Cook, 75, of Greensboro, North Carolina, passed away on December 23, 2024, in his hometown.

Born on May 13, 1949, in Greensboro to Carl Henry Cook and Leigh Gilbert Cook, Phil spent his entire life rooted in the community he loved. A proud graduate of Ben L. Smith High School in1967. He later graduated from the Police Academy-laying the foundation for a distinguished career in law enforcement.

Phil dedicated 29 years to the Greensboro Police Department, retiring in 1997. Throughout his tenure, he served with integrity and commitment as a patrol officer, a member of the Vice/Narcotics squad, and ultimately as a detective in the Criminal Investigation Division. His work reflected his deep sense of duty and unwavering loyalty to protecting others.

Beyond his professional life, Phil was a devoted family man and active member of Northside Baptist Church in Greensboro. He was married to Betty Jo Cook for 52 years until her passing-a partnership marked by love and steadfast support. Together they raised two children: Heather Anderson (Carson) and Heath Cook (Danielle), who carry forward his legacy of strength and compassion.

Phil found immense joy in being "PawPaw" to his grandchildren: Will and Kate Anderson and Chloe Cook. Whether attending their events or simply spending time together, he cherished every moment with them.

A man of many interests, Phil enjoyed playing golf, following baseball, participating in church activities, and tackling any repair project that came his way. He had a lifelong fascination with Civil War history-often reading or watching documentaries on the subject-and held a deep affection for animals. Known for his storytelling ability and sharp sense of humor, Phil brought warmth and laughter wherever he went.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Betty Jo Cook; his father Carl Henry Cook; and his mother Leigh Gilbert Cook.

Phil will be remembered as a selfless protector, a loyal friend, a thoughtful Christian man with an enduring love for family. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.

A memorial service will be held on July 18, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Northside Baptist Church 1100 E Cornwallis Dr.

Phil always seemed upbeat, with a laugh and a funny story to share. He was a testimony to decent, professional law enforcement, and will be missed by many.

Phil remembered everything and every one . As a detective he amazed everyone with his knowledge and recall. If you needed anything about a person or a case, Phil was the one to call. A great guy and a great cop!
