Phyllis Esber Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 10, 2024.
Phyllis Jean Esber, 89, of Cleveland, Ohio, passed away on May 31, 2024, in Leesburg, Virginia. Phyllis was born and raised in Cleveland by her parents Jessie and Roy Eggert. In 1953, she graduated from Lincoln High School and was the valedictorian of her class.

Immediately following high school, Phyllis worked as a secretary for a small trucking company before getting married to her high school sweetheart Jim Esber in 1956, and raising three boys. She sang in her church choir at the United Church of Christ in Middleburg Heights, Ohio. When the boys reached high school, Phyllis took a job in the church office, where she worked until she retired at the age of 60.

Following retirement, Phyllis and Jim travelled extensively throughout the United States and Europe. They began spending part of the year in Ellenton, Florida, before ultimately selling their home in Strongsville, Ohio and relocating full time to The Villages in Central Florida. In July 2023, Phyllis and Jim moved to Ashby Ponds in Ashburn, Virginia to be closer to family.

Phyllis was a devoted wife to Jim and a loving mother to Greg, Brett and James. She was a happy and fun-loving person who enjoyed travel, spending time with family and friends, playing cards and games, reading (especially James Patterson novels), cooking, and watching sports. Even during the last few years of her life, when her memory and physical capabilities were limited, she was always quick to smile and laugh, and loved to give a good hug and a kiss.

Phyllis is survived, and will be deeply missed, by her beloved husband of 68 years Jim, her sons and daughters-in-laws Greg (Sandy), Brett (Eva) and James (Jane Fine), as well as her grandchildren Joshua Wright, Amelia Esber Randall (Richard), Jordan Esber (Julia Nelson), Anne Esber Bellino (Jeff), Michael Esber and Abraham Esber, and her great-grandchildren Hailey Wright, Allison Wright, Sophia Bellino and Shaun Bellino.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Monday, June 17, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Rock Spring Congregational Church, 5010 Little Falls Road, Arlington, Virginia 22207. May she rest in peace.
