Phyllis Jen MD, 60, of Needham died at the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Needham on Tuesday April 21st from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. An internist who for the past 27 years served as medical director of Brigham Internal Medicine Associates. Born in Cambridge and raised in Silver Spring, Md., Dr. Jen studied chemistry at Brown University, worked for several years at the National Institutes of Health as a lab technician, and attended medical school at the State University of New York’s Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn . She interned at Stanford University and then became a resident at the Brigham in 1976. In 1982, she became medical director of Brigham Internal Medicine Associates, a large primary care practice at the Brigham and the hospital’s main training ground for residents specializing in internal medicine. Over the years Dr. Jen held various leadership positions at the Brigham, served as editor of the online version of the Harvard University Family Health Guide, and won numerous awards, including one for community service in 2004, in part for her work to help the poor and uninsured receive medical care. Dr. Jen was the clinical leader of the hospital’s volunteer program, which sent doctors of all specialties to provide healthcare to Native Americans in New Mexico She was the beloved wife of Robert W. Schlauch MD. Loving mother of Michael of Needham and Papua New Guinea, Daniel and Amy both of Needham. Sister of May Koo of Mountain View, CA, Linda Jacobson of Pittsburg, PA and Erica Jen of Brookline, MA. A memorial service will be held at her home at 134 Edgewater Drive in Needham on Sunday April 26th at 1:00 PM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Visiting hours will be held at the Eaton Funeral Home 1351 Highland Ave Needham on Saturday from 4-7 Pm. In Lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Phyllis Jen Memorial Fund, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, 75 Francis St. Boston, MA 02114.
