I will always remember the fun I had with my friends Willard and Royce growing up in Picher. We use to hang around Harry Kelso's shop and he would give us candy and sodas. It was some of the best times in my life and helped to mold me into the man I became.

I was in Iraq when I found out that Picher had been wiped out by the tornado. My heart slammed into my throat and my stomach curdled cause of the fact that my Grandfather, Bill Squirrel, still lived in picher even though he had been given so many offers to move. If anyone can give me an answer that he is still alive I would greatly appreciate it. Please email me at [email protected]. My prayers are with all the families.

My husband and I just got home from touring the devastation, in Picher. He has talked so much with fond memories of playing on the Chat piles with his brothers as a child, there. And PBS aired a special about the superfund ordeal and my daughter just wept over the injustice of it all, now this....the unthinkable. And my heart caved at the thought of lives being lost in this devastation! I pray for all the fine folks in the area there. You are Gods finest, though enough to walk through this horrible devastation, and still stand tall with pride for your community!Your heavy in my heart, I just can not get your loss out of my mind! And I pray help comes soon to assist you in the clean up, and rebuild!God Bless you all

My grandmother & grandfather used to live in Picher when my mother was a young girl. My grandfather was a dynamite man in the Eagle-Picher mines. I am sorry to hear of the devastation that has come to Picher for it holds special memories for my family. May God be with each and every family touched by the tragedy and all of you will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I have lived in picher all of my life and still do.My oldest daugther, her three children and my youngest daugther were home when the tornado hit. Thank the lord that they were worned in enough time to run across the street to a residence that had already been bought out and get into the celler there.

May God be with the people of Picher. I love Picher and always will... My mother Elaine (Cobb) Goins (PHS '55) was raised there and my twin sister and I (who have lived in California our whole lives) spent all our summers there growing up. We still now go back each summer for a couple weeks to stay in Picher. My Grandmother Ellen Freeman finally moved a few months ago to Commerce, but by God's grace escaped harm from the tornado as she was planning to be in Picher the evening of May 10. Picher people are the best people on earth and I love them and all the wonderful memories I have of this town. May God help them rebuild their lives and go on after this sad event. My family in Picher included my mother Elaine Cobb, Earl and Rhyldia Hand (ran the American Apartments for years along with my grandmother Dorotha Cobb) and of course, my father's mom and step-dad Ellen and Virgil Freeman. If you have memories of these folks to share with me, please send email to [email protected].

You have all been in my thoughts and prayers since I received news Saturday night that the tornado had hit and Picher was all but gone. My Father was born in Picher, and is now laid to rest there with the rest of his family. He loved Picher and it broke his heart to see it over the last few years as it struggled to hang on. However, as a kid, he made it come alive for me! He would stand on Main St and tell me a story illustrating how it looked then, and I could see it. Often the tables were turned, when Miss Wanda, or one of my cousins would sit and tell me their side of the story, how it was to watch the young Bill around town on whatever his mission of the day might be.
The families of the men and women who toiled to build that town, who always considered it home, will always hold you and your memories dear.

As a former Picherite I am saddened by the total devastation. Although I left many years ago the memories of my younger days are there.
Brick and mortar may fade or give way but fond memories will help get you to another day. A Picherite isn't just a current resident of a town in N.E. Oklahoma, but rather something you take with you wherever you go.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make your paths straight.
I am praying for all of you

As a ex-resident of Miami Oklahoma, I am so sadden by the tragedy, by loss of life by those in that Tornado. in Picher Oklahoma. My thoughts and prayers are with your families. Matthew 5:4 (Kjv) BLESSED are THEY that MOURN: for THEY shall be COMFORTED. Psalms 126:5 (KJV) THEY that SOW in TEARS shall REAP in JOY. Revelation 21:4 (KJV) And GOD shall WIPE ALL TEARS from their EYES; and there shall be NO more DEATH, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. Just be comforted to know God knows your pain.

I grew up next door in Treece and felt like home was truly gone when I learned of this terrible devastation. It seems that Mother Nature has finally brought an end to an era. But, the people of the tri-state district have always proven to be strong and resilient. I send my love and thoughts to all of you who have lost loved ones, lost your homes, and lost the treasures that will remain only in your memories.

At times like this there are no words to express how Horrific the devastation really is, unless you have lived through it.
Video’s and Photos DO NO justice when you see a Book from 17 miles away buried 8 inches in the ground in your front yard, Bark striped from living green trees 50 or 60 foot tall or a pond that is now empty, that was full that very morning. Farm equipment and cars tossed like toys wrapped around trees. All that‘s left of your home is the foundation, everything else is gone.
I know because on May 3rd 1999, I watched as most of the world did, an F-6 Tornado (the largest on record) sweep through Bridge Creek, Oklahoma with 318 mile an hour winds that leveled our community, taking 11 lives. You walk around numb and tremble at the thought of another storm as the days go by.
But.. there is hope, you will recover, and build a stronger community in Picher, just as we have done here in Bridge Creek.
I want you to know that fellow Oklahomans across our great State are keeping you “ALL” in our prayers and thoughts during this difficult time.
May God Bless

words are hard to come by at such tragic results and lose of life. My thoughts and prayers are with all that have lost loved one's and have suffered such horror in all the States of the United States Of America effected by this savage tornado.
A tornado that kills and does so much damge, is surly a bad thing, for all.
For the weather too be calm, would be a real down to earth blessing.
May God in Heaven hold everyone dear and rain in the weather once again.
Best Wishes. Stuart

I have recently started to research my family history, and remember visiting my grandmother when I was a child in Picher OK. Her kitchen had a floor that sloped, and that's most of what I remember about her. Her name was Edna, but do not know what her last name was. She has since passed away, but I wanted to let all of you know, that my thoughts and prayers are with you all, some of you may be my long lost relatives! Any Hewkins out there? I suffered through the loss from a fire many years ago, we lost everything. Keep your heads up, believe me, you will make it through stronger and wiser. Hold your loved ones close and count your blessings. You will find many blessings as you come through this.
