Porfirio S. "Steve" Canales, of San Antonio, Texas passed away Wednesday, July 30, 2014. He was born February 17, 1955 in Victoria, Texas to the late Victor V. and Alicia A. Canales.

Steve was a Victoria High School graduate, Class of '73. Upon graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served during the Vietnam Era at Clark AFB, Phillipines and Lackland AFB, TX until 1981. In 1988 he received his Bachelor's Degree in Sociology and in 2000 a Master's Degree in Organizational Management.

Steve was a fun loving person who lived life to the fullest. He was a former member of the Mt. Washington Valley Kiwanas Club supporting the needs of children and recently a member of "The Amigos". The majority of his working career was in family support programs, child development, youth programs, and child protective services. He loved coaching youth sports (baseball, softball and basketball) and enjoyed mentoring children. He recently was working with a group of high school friends to establish "The Amigos" to help under privileged children. He was so very proud of his two daughters and loved to share with others all their accomplishments. He loved all his pets and would have had a house full of rescues if not for his wife!

Steve had a zest for life and a contagious sense of humor that one couldn't help but admire. Steve worked hard and played hard and I will remember the countless good times we had both on and off the job. Rest in peace my friend.

I met Steve when he came to Cardiac Rehab, what a wonderful, thoughful, caring person. He did always have a smile and he did always talk about his family and his antique shopping trips. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Mr. Canales has not only been a patient of mine for the past two years, he was also my friend, I saw him several times a week some days were good other were not . But he always came in with a smile on his face. He talked about how much he loved going to the casinos with his wife and traveling. Giving me advice on all the good places I should go see. thought we may be sad to see him go, I can just imagine sitting with him one more time while he describes just how beautiful heaven is, and how it tops all the rest of the places he has ever told me about. To his family I give my condolences , To my friend Steve I say good bye my friend and good travels. Love your friend always Jackie Perez
