Prunella Scales Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 28 to Oct. 29, 2025.
Prunella Scales, the acclaimed English actor whose brisk wit and piercing timing made Sybil Fawlty a television icon, died October 27, 2025, at her home in London. She was 93. Her sons, Samuel and Joseph West, said she died peacefully after living with dementia for several years.

Born Prunella Margaret Rumney Illingworth on June 22, 1932, in Sutton Abinger, Surrey, England, she trained for the stage and began working in film and television in the 1950s. Early recognition came in the BBC sitcom "Marriage Lines" opposite Richard Briers (1934–2013), and she went on to a long run of popular television, stage, and film roles.

Her defining role arrived in 1975 with John Cleese and Connie Booth's "Fawlty Towers," where Scales's Sybil-steel-spined, stylish, and surgically sardonic-sparred with Basil Fawlty across two near-perfect series. The performance became part of Britain's cultural furniture, and it remains the role most closely associated with her.

But there was more to Scales than comedy. She shone as Elizabeth Mapp in "Mapp & Lucia," the widowed mother in "After Henry," and Queen Elizabeth II (1926–2022) in Alan Bennett's "A Question of Attribution." She earned a BAFTA nomination for the latter. She appeared in films including "The Hound of the Baskervilles" (1978) and "Howards End" (1992). She was appointed CBE in 1992.

In later years, she charmed a new audience in "Great Canal Journeys," a documentary travel series she co-hosted with her husband, the actor Timothy West (1934–2024). The couple's affection-quiet, frank, and funny-was the heart of the program.

Scales spoke publicly about her condition after a 2013 diagnosis of vascular dementia, including discussing it in "Great Canal Journeys." Even as her memory faded, her family said, she watched "Fawlty Towers" the day before she died-one last encounter with the role that made her famous.

She married West in 1963; he died in 2024. In addition to her sons, she is survived by a stepdaughter, Juliet; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Colleagues and critics praised Scales's immaculate timing and control. Her Sybil set the template for a certain British comedic archetype: brisk, capable women who hold chaos at bay through sheer force of personality. It's a legacy visible in subsequent sitcoms and in the enduring, world-wide afterlife of "Fawlty Towers."

I had the pleasure of working with Prunella briefly as an extra on a TV production called The Lord of Misrule, I played her body guard, Prunella was using a caravan as her changing facilities while on location in Devon, she invited me to have a drink with her which I gladly accepted. The white wine had been left out of the fridge and the only drinking vessel was a polystyrene cup but we cheered each other took a sip, grimaced at the taste then she was called away. Before she left I asked if she would send a signed photo of herself for my two children, she agreed she would. I thought that would be the end of any contact, but low and behold they arrived a few days later and I still have one. My children were pleased although not sure of who she was, but for me it was a pleasure to have met her, a very warm and honest lady and a nice dinner story. Thank you Prunella, rest in peace.

I absolutely loved Prunella Scales in Fawlty Towers, and was thrilled to see her again in an episode of MidSomer Murders. I'm sorry I missed everything in between - my television is smarter than I am and doesn't let me in on its secrets.

Her talent and kindness was apparent in her interactions with people through interviews. I loved that she would not want to hit John Cleese with the umbrella unless it was padded! Heartfelt well wishes to her family and friends.

It was absolutely lovely to watch Prunella and Tim in Great Canal Journeys...Not only did they show what it was like to travel, they navigated her dementia wonderfully and brought awareness to it. Of course I first learned of her through Fawlty Towers, but as well as bringing comedy and great laughter, she leaves behind a wonderful legacy of bringing awareness to dementia.

"Lovely" is the best description of a woman who is so wonderful and can make me gut laugh at the same time. A rare talent, a caregiver to all.

A great actress that so many enjoyed watching on "Fawlty Towers" and other things. Just an all around joy to watch, she was funny and so entertaining. She was more than acting as she pursued other endeavors and was successful. Prayers to the Scales family. May God be with you in your time of loss.

We are all celebrating the life of a talented British actress Connie Both´s, she will be truly missed, yeah, never be forgotten. Her defining role arrived in 1973 with John Cleese and Connie Both´s in a British TV show "Fawlty Towers," where Scalea´s Sybil-steel spined, stylish, and surgically sardonic- sparred with Basil Fawlty across two near-perfect series. The performance became part of Britain´s culture furniture, and it remains the role most closely associated with her. I do remember. I growing up watching Fawlty Tower in 1975 through 1979 John Cleese played Basil, Pernella Scales played Sybil, they were both hysterical and funny, and you never know what Basil will do or say thank you for bringing the laughter into our homes making us laugh. Deepest Sympathy Condolences To Purnella Scale´s Family, Fans
We all know that she´s in a good place now it has reunited with the people she worked with. As her soul still on as her body departs eternally back to heaven, and she´s with the angels now. My thoughts, prayers are with you, your family.

I was very lucky to have worked with Pru, at the turn of the century, on a little sci-fi film I produced called Phoenix, later retitled Helix. It was quite early in my career, and I can honestly say that she gave me the confidence to be a better director. I left the industry for a couple of decades, but now I´m back... and that´s largely in honour of Prunella Scales.

She was absolutely lovely, and as tough as old boots. I will forever be indebted to my friend- Juliet (her stepdaughter), for introducing us.

RIP Prunella. Eternal thanks, and love.

To Sam and Joe,

We never met but I traveled down canals with you and your parents. I saw this post and I cried. I know what it´s like to lose the mother you´ve loved forever. I won´t lie. It doesn´t get any easier. Know this. Your mother was loved by me and countless others. Her work touched our hearts. I´ve worried about how she was coping without your father since he passed last year. You´re all in my thoughts and prayers.
