Pyotr, three years on,you are a part of my life and also David's. You are etched in our minds and our hearts. But we miss so much our conversations and laughter and sharing - no matter the subject, large or small, you always engaged, a Man for All Seasons, a Man of Wisdom and altogether unique.

Dearest Pyotr
It is three years today since you left us so suddenly. Some things have changed in all our lives since that sad day, but your memory will always remain. We never forget you and miss you still.

So hard to believe that a year has passed already since we lost our dear friend Pyot. Close friendship is hard to come by but his deep and enduring friendship with my dear Adam was a very special relationship. I miss them both.

Dear Pyotr, I am moved to read these messages again and to see new ones. Sometimes I drive past the road leading to the house where you lived with Alisa and Andrei, and each time I remember how much you contributed to the lives of others, including mine. Where you were, there is now an empty space and I miss you still. I pray you are at peace. Your life was so well lived.

I first met Pyotr Patrushev in the 1980s when we begin to work together on the translation of my book on Conflict Resolution, Everyone Can Win, into Russian. We had wonderful discussions together as he worked on the best way of translating the skills into Russian and helping them set comfortably in another culture and language. Once the book was published in Russia, no mean feat to accomplish in those days, we toured together in St. Petersburg and Moscow teaching the skills outlined in the book. He was a wonderful public speaker and facilitator and kept our audiences engaged and involved.

His writings show what a brilliant mind he had quirky, original and deep thinking. His stories demonstrate his great humanity, his humour, his warm heart and his unique world view. I commend them to you with the friendly warning that you will see the world a little differently after reading them.

As well was being a top-notch simultaneous interpreter, Pyotr was a remarkable man. Some people stand out from the crowd. Pyotr was larger than life. His exploits are amazing. To do what he did: swim from Batumi in Georgia across the Black Sea to Turkey, you have to be very determined and very brave indeed. His story is like that of a legendary hero: condemned to death, on the KGB's 'Wanted List' for over 25 years, jailed in Turkey. Later he became a simultaneous United Nations interpreter in Australia and there again he stood out from the crowd. He was always the very first Russian interpreter I recruited whenever I had an international conference to organize. If he was available, I knew I could count on compliments from the delegates after the closing session. He was always thoroughly reliable, conscientious; his interpretation was brilliant. He can never be replaced.

Pyotr, You phoned me from the Denver, Colorado (USA) bus station, probably in the late 70s or 80s. I had never heard of you. We spent about 24 hours together, talking about many things. From the first hours I developed a profound respect and affection for you, and although we never met again in person I treasured each interaction by phone or email, and every bit of news about your life. You are missed.

It was very sad indeed to lose a friend who was so charming and intelligent and a great raconteur. However, it seems fitting that he died from a stroke, close to his 'element' of water, while strolling along his favourite beach.

I was so sad to learn of Pyotr's passing. He was a true gentleman who led a remarkable life. He stood at the apex of his profession as the most experienced and knowledgeable member of the translating and interpreting fraternity. I sought his advice and guidance many times over the years and I learned so much from him.

It was my privilege and good fortune to first meet Pyotr in the early 1970's in Auckland. For me Pyotr was a supportive and understanding mentor, an inspiration and a life-changer. In my early 20's I was coming to the end of formal education and a little unsure as to where life might take me. Then by chance I met this incredible person who had just arrived in NZ. During the time I spent with Pyotr which included living on a picturesque small farm in the Waitakere Ranges, unstressing during a month long TM meditation course and having numerous adventures while travelling around NZ in a $300 Mk 2 Jaguar that we bought together I learned from him many values and much of the knowledge which has guided me through the remainder of my life. He has been my primary role model. An exceptional human being in so many ways and a very sad loss to so many people.
