R. William (Bill) Freston Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 26, 2025.
R. William (Bill) Freston passed away peacefully on February 20, 2025, surrounded by family in Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan following a traumatic fall on the island of Bequia in the Caribbean. Bill was born on May 9, 1948, in New Rochelle, New York to the late Thomas and Winifred Freston. He lived in Manhattan.

Bill grew up in Rowayton, Connecticut, where he attended high school and went on to graduate from St. Michael's College in 1970. A deep passion for music and a fascination with its cultural impact in the 60s and 70s, led Bill to a lifetime of positions in the music and media industries. His first job was at the free form radio station WNTN in Boston where he rose to General Manager in 1972. He moved to New York City in 1973 to begin work at Columbia Records during a golden age for the music business. He held a series of positions there, working with a wide range of artists including the Rolling Stones, Billy Joel, Aerosmith, Janis Ian, Blue Oyster Cult, and John McLaughlin. Bill became Special Assistant to the legendary Bruce Lundwall, President of Columbia Records, and eventually rose to Senior Vice-President. He helped spearhead projects like 1979's "Havana Jam," a historic event that brought Cuban and American musicians together for the first time since the Cuban Revolution.

Always on the frontier, Bill was, among other things, a founder of Click Radio, the first licensed digital radio service, and helped launch Zingy Media, the first mobile music streaming channel.

Bill was truly beloved with the widest circle of friends. Smart, quick witted, full of life with an encyclopedic knowledge of the arts, he brought a joyful energy to every room he entered. Many thought he was the funniest person they'd ever met, "Bill gives the greatest lunch in town."

Bill was very proud of and devoted to his sobriety, which he held close for 28 years. He selflessly helped put many others onto that path.

An inveterate adventurer, Bill fully embraced life to the end travelling the far corners of the world. At heart, he was an island boy, always happiest off the mainland. He'd return again and again to his happiest places and their off-beat communities… Martha's Vineyard, Port Antonio, Jamaica, Kauai, and Bequia in the Grenadines. He spent his last five winters there, known by the locals as "Uncle Bill."

Bill leaves behind his older brother Tom and his two beloved nephews, Andrew and Gil. The family expresses their deep gratitude to the doctors and staff at Mount Sinai Hospital for their compassion and heroic attempts to resuscitate him. A funeral service and memorial will be held in April. Bill requested that any donations go to Compassionate Care ALS Inc. (www.ccals.org) in loving memory of his best friend Thomas "Dilly" Walsh.

I am so sorry to hear about Bill. He was a wonderful human being. My business partner and I had the pleasure of working and traveling with Bill for a few years. He was very smart, great company and had the best sense of humor. Twenty four karat stories. One of a kind, he is missed.

Sorry for your loss, Tom. Billy was a classically funny guy, who made his mark from his teenage years. Fond memories!

Terri and I are sad to hear of Bill´s passing I first got to know Bill when he and I were both students at St Michael´s College (Vermont) in the 60s. Bill´s brother Tom and I were fellow classmates at St Mikes, and good friends. I later spent time with him on the Vineyard where we both misbehaved at a very high level. We had many friends in common, including the infamous Tom "Dilly" Walsh.
Bill was a great guy, and passionate about life. He was so very proud of his brother Tom, and his nephews.
He and I were so very lucky to have found sobriety, and the joy that comes in living a sober life for many, many years.
I hadn´t seen Bill in years, but did keep in touch directly on social media. I am a better person for having crossed paths with him in my life.
Rest easy Billy.

I am so sad to read about Bill Freston. It's been a very long time since I've seen him (or even heard his name), but I was online looking for people I knew and worked with at CBS Records/Sony Music, and saw his obituary, which made me very sad. Bill was a good guy, and although we weren't in the same circle of friends, I liked him a lot. If anyone I know from my CBS/Sony Music days wants to chat, please feel free to call me. I'm in New York City (Manhattan).

To our friend Bill-you brought tremendous light and joy to this crazy world.

A quick smile, great sense of humor, always positive energy, wise with no nonsense advice, charismatic, and a generous spirit to all those you touched.

Together with brother Tom a formidable force of nature.

We will miss you, such a sad goodbye. At the same time a celebration for a great life lived, and a deep appreciation for the happiness you brought to everyone, everywhere.

Forever in our memory, thank you.

All our love,
Bill and Alex Roedy

I'm really going to miss my old friend Bill. He was always the very best of company, whether in person or on the phone. Nobody could compete with that huge, high-energy, relentlessly funny personality. I never knew anyone else even remotely like him. What a loss.
