Rachel ARCHER

ARCHER, Rachel Mitchell Rachel Mitchell Archer, 91, passed away on June 7, 2017 at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Virginia. She was born on July 25, 1925 in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands as one of three children to Dora Otis Mitchell and Mason Edward Mitchell. In her youth she lived in Annapolis, Maryland and Guantanamo, Cuba before graduating with honors from Conway Arkansas High School in 1943. She earned her undergraduate degree from Hendrix College in 1947 and her Masters of Education in Music from Georgia Southern University in 1974. Rachel loved music her entire life as a student, a teacher, and a devoted member of her church choir. She was a dedicated member of Peachtree Christian Church in Atlanta, Georgia for 45 years and more recently a member of Abingdon United Methodist in Abingdon, Virginia. She was a long-time employee of SunTrust Bank in Atlanta at their headquarters branch. She loved helping others and at 89, devoted her time to teaching children to read at Greendale Elementary School in Virginia. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Larry Bauer of Bristol, Virginia, her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Andy Abrams of Sandy Springs, Georgia, and her son, Jim Archer of Woodstock, Georgia. She is also survived by her ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Rachel was preceded in death by her loving husband of nearly 50 years, Bill Archer, and her son, Berry Archer. A memorial service will be held at Peachtree Christian Church in Atlanta, Georgia on Sunday, July 2 at 2 pm.
