HIGH POINT — Mrs. Rachel Gillean Gray, 79, a resident of High Point, passed away Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at High Point Regional Hospital.

A native of Rowan County, she was born September 26, 1930, a daughter to Jesse Frank and Janet Miller Gillean.

On June 12, 1950, she married Bill Gray and together they operated High Point Hardware. In 1965 she was named High Pointer of the Week. Rachel was elected to the High Point City Council in 1976 and three years later ran and was elected for a Senate Seat in the NC General Assembly, which she held through 1984. Friends will remember her as a tireless advocate and supporter of High Point, Guilford County and just causes. She led to establish the Mental Health Association of High Point, where she served as president of the first association board of directors in 1967 and was an advocate and board member of the Washington Drive Resource and Enrichment Center in the early 1990's. She will further be remembered for "always putting High Point first". Rachel was member of First United Methodist Church of High Point and was preceded in death by her husband Bill Gray on December 25, 2000, a son, Bruce Gray in April 1991 and a sister, Ruth Crawford in April 2009

She is survived by sons. Frank Gray and wife Ginger of Jamestown and Tom Gray and wife Denise of Germantown, TN, four grandchildren, Justin, Leslie, Will and Tommy Gray.

Funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, January 23, 2010 in the sanctuary of First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Chris Fitzgerald and Rev. Fran Moran officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakwood Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends and relatives 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Friday, January 22, 2010 at Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point.
