Rajkumar's death ends a great chapter in Kannada film history. He was not just an actor he was an industry himself. The team which worked with him sounds like the dream team. Directors Dorai-Bhagwan, Somashekar, Renuka Sharma. Music directors Rajan Nagendra, Upendra Kumar, GK Venkatesh.
Rajkumar's movies gave Kannada something to identify with. Rajkumar also shaped the kannada identiy during the 60s, 70s and during the Gokak agitation to give Kannada the place of pride.
May his soul rest in peace.

Rajkumar was more than an actor. His lifestyle, simplicity and humble nature elicited the best in all. The public love for him is legendary and reached heights that would make even other legends envious. His movies were always special to me. He will always have a special place in my heart.

As many have noted certainly there is no death for Rajkumar. He is in all of us. When I heard the news, I literally asked the caller to tell me if they were not kidding about it. Though we all knew he was hospitalized off and on since the unfortunate kidnapping and given the hard fact that one day every body has to go, any thought of him not being around any more is truly unconscionable for us kannadigas. Though 77, for us on the screen he is always 27. That is how powerful the effect of his acting and singing has been on us. His films and roles diffused good values and stood up agains wrong. They were uplifting. He is the one and only legend whose acting range has been so wide to my knowledge. Take historical roles, mythological roles, bond roles, social roles, devotional roles, if he did it, the word misfit would just lose its dictionary meaning because his performance and dialogue delivery was great. Equally great was his singing talent in the latter part of his career. Again wide range; take any song be it romantic, classical, devotional, angry songs, sad songs, happy songs. They were not sung for singing sake but had the right blend of intonations and emotions. Many still wonder why he didn't sing from get-go. Many lyrics were just written after him in later days, including the famous Huttidare KannaDa NaaDali Huttabeku meaning You Should Live and Die in Kannada Soil capturing the pride. He was humble about his sucess, respected his fans, and use to call and address all his admirers as god.
His love for language and state interests is yet another everest; he understood very well that language is the basis of any artist, art and culture. Thus he nudged people to not give it up through his films songs and also by leading kannada movements. His oratoray skills was stunning--imagine a 3rd grade drop out with out any formal education not to mention harvard degrees could just take control of lakhs of frenzy people gathered by just walking up to the microphone. This is my view as an admirer since childhood.
As his peers have rightly said, he himself was a university, always learning, always performing. There is lot to copy from this great role model both on-screen and off-screen. It is hard to imagine any one getting close to him in near future. He will be with us for generations and generations to come. We are surely blessed to be born in the same period as Rajkumar.

Dr. Rajkumar's contribution to Kannada is monumental. No other person is so deeply beloved by common man and the elite as Rajanna. In addition to movies he has left us innumerble number of songs that always bring joy to the listener.
Every time I listen to 'huTTidare kannaDa nADali huTTabEku..meTTidare kannaDa maNNanu meTTabEku' makes my heart swell with pride and joy.
Greatest son of kannaDamma will be missed. We are fortunate to have lived in his era.
We should celebrate his life. He lived a rich and full life.

Raj Kumar was a unique individual who remained clean and was never influenced by politics or power, even though he could have gone into politics. He was also an individual who was not influenced by money, when he could have made millions for each film. He remains a legend and may be one of the very few actors whose character remains clean. He was spiritual and had a melodious voice. I saw a few of his films when I was in college. The best was "Bangaruda Manushya" where I thought his acting was superb. We will all miss him dearly.

Having known Dr. Rajkumar at close proximity for well over several years, words fail and thoughts deceive to eulogize Rajkumar’s humility, nobility and the way he led his simple life. Rajkumar had no rivals in his profession and he reigned the Film Industry for 5 decades. Starting from Bedara Kannappa in 1954, his acting career spanned for 205 films and his last film was Shabhdavedhi. Incidentally, I also entered Film Industry in the same year 1954, and was associated in the production of Rajkumar Films like Sivagange Mahatme, Naga Pooja, Bangarada Hoovu. Notably Rajkumar’s 100th film BHAGYADA BAGILU and 125th film BALU BELAGITHU was produced by me way back in India in 1967 and 1970 respectively.
Rajkumar also proved his mettle as a talented play back singer with Sampathige Saval and from then on he never looked back in singing his own songs. Besides devotional albums he has also rendered some songs for various films in which he has not acted.
Rajkumar has won innumerable titles and laurels like Varanata, Natasarwabhowma, Kannada Rathna, Padmabhushana, and many more. His rapport with the film industry as a whole was simple and humble and his popularity was seamless, boundless and limitless.
He has been a role model for thousands of artistes in South India. His acting career was flawless and he was a versatile artiste in playing any kind of roles, be it Historical, Mythological, Folklore, Social Family Drama.
Rajkumar was deeply perturbed by the death of his brother Varadappa recently and this loss played a dominant role in his destabilization. Varadappa was an integral part of Rajkumar’s career and he could not digest this great loss.
Rajkumar was a legend and it is hard to see a person of this caliber. He was popularly known as “Annavaru” with reverence. Annavaru signifies respected elder brother and he was Annavru for the entire film fraternity. Even if volumes and volumes are said about Rajkumar, it is very little.
Rajkumar was spontaneous in fighting against any problems confronted in the Kannada Film Industry and in fact, way back in 1960’s when Kannada films were very rare and hard to find a place, it was Rajkumar who stood in front to lead for the propagation of Kannada films. He never lived for himself and he belonged to the people. Raj Kumar was a people’s person and he has left behind millions and millions of fans in great sorrow. May his departed soul rest in peace.
Even if death is a common phenomenon that exists among human beings, the death of certain individuals is very lacerating. There are individuals, even if they die, who will be remembered in history forever. The death of Dr. Rajkumar is on this stand. He was a beaconlight to the entire Karnataka Film fraternity and the loss is irreparable.

It is end of a colorful era, for Kannada and Karnataka, spanning over 5 decades.
I grew up watching his movies. Our family never missed them. He could have easily become the chief minister of Karnataka, but, he never wanted to get into politics. He greatly contributed to the cause of Kannada more than any other politician.
He became more like a saint towards the end of his life by virtue of his humbleness, simplicity and spirituality. May his soul rest in peace.

Dr Raj was affectionately called 'Annavaru' by 40 million 'Kannadigas'(people whose mother tongue is Kannada).Kannada is the official language of Karnataka,a southern state in India of which Bangalore is the capital.'Annavaru' means an elder brother (read friend, philosopher and guide) in Kannada. What made Rajkumar endearing to the masses in Karnataka was the fact that he was not only their favorite on-screen hero but also humility personified in real life.He also led a life shorn of 'vices' like smoking and drinking. He is perhaps the only actor-hero in the history of cinema who also sang his own playback songs. The playback song, as we know , is an inseparable part of any Indian movie.
