Gracious and companionable to the end, Ralph led an exemplary life of vigour, determination and a wide-ranging curiosity. It was a source of great happiness for me to be a friend of his. He persists in our lives.

In 1971, Ralph gave me the opportunity to play First Voice and Mrs. Ogmore-Pritchard in his student production of Under Milk Wood. He was a great teacher, director, and actor and I will always remember that experience as one of the great highlights of my education. Heaven will be one funny and interesting place with Ralph in it.

With Ralph's passing goes an irreplaceable method of scholarship and caring. As "Olson's scholar" (by Olson's request), Ralph became the most conscientious and knowledgeable exegete Olson could have chosen. For nearly 45 years, Ralph and I worked together on and off on various Olson-related projects. He was a great teacher, involving his students directly in research and intellectual self-reliance. He was a great friend, too. From Ralph I learned a lot about editing and the art of understanding and the generative capacities of directness and complexity. We will miss him terribly. His work and his life will have no parallel.

Ralph was a true gentleman who I feel lucky to have known for as long as I can remember. Ralph's sparkling wit and keen observations enlightened many a dinner party at my parents' home. From the telescope he gave to my brothers and I when we were children, to the recent birthday magazine subscriptions he gave me (hilariously contrasting, as only Ralph could devise), he was always encouraging people to stretch their minds and their hearts. Ralph was kind and thoughtful and will be greatly missed. Rest in peace.

I have thought of Ralph often over the years and enjoyed seeing him in California when I had my store and Ralph was egging me on to fine additional Olson appearances in little mags. Good to hear that he ended his life well and in the arms of love. Just today I was describing early issues of AUDIT edited from Buffalo back in the way when. HIs prose was graceful, questing, full of a learning that was deep and yet lightly worn. His presence was like quicksilver, always moving, challenging you to keep up. He will be missed.

Pioneering scholar, champion of social justice, truth seeker, archetypal sojourner – Ralph gave so much to this world. Those of us who were fortunate enough to be his friends know about his quiet generosity and compassion. We will miss him terribly.

It was Ralph that developed the curriculum for ethnopoetry at SFU. I was fortunate to have been in the first classes with him as teacher. It was one of his abiding interests and years later when I met him at a friends birthday party we talked about George Quasha and his great book, America, A prophecy. May he RIP.

from Day 1 at SFU in 1965 when we met he seemed one of the last Mohicans of scholarship who forged new trails and found traces where others didn't see them. He lived in literature as if literature was a dream world of myth and signs.

Ralph was a wonderful professor and it was serendipity to find him at SFU. He introduced me to Charles Olson and many new poets. I spent one summer working with him on his books on Charles Hill-Toot and we had good fun. He will be missed and our condolences to his family and friends.
