Ralph ('Rip') Pereida Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 22, 2025.
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Ralph Inness Pereida ('Rip') on Friday, August 15, 2025, in Boise, ID. He was 79 years old.

Born to Ralph and Anita (Brown) Pereida of New Canaan, CT, Rip attended Purdue University and worked as a chemical engineer and plant manager for Morton Thiokol for 34 years, living in Chicago, IL; Manistee, MI; Crystal Lake, IL; and Warsaw, IN before retiring to his dream house in the mountains in Boise, ID. He is survived by his wife, Chrys (Teeter) Pereida; his daughter, Alison (Pereida) Knapp; and his siblings, Ed Pereida and Laurie (Pereida) Sawhill. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Kathleen (Sebesta).

Rip was an avid outdoorsman, fireworks enthusiast, gifted photographer, skilled hockey player, proud cat dad, and constant tinkerer. He was never without a project and always itching to go for a hike, finding interest, adventure and enjoyment all around him. His delight in life was infectious, bringing out the inner child in everyone he encountered; he will be dearly missed by all those whose lives he touched.

Rip did not want a memorial service; instead, his family asks that you spend some time in nature remembering him. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made in Rip's memory to Sierra Club or The Nature Conservancy.

"Take only pictures, leave only footprints."

My must vivid memory of Rip, whom I knew as Ralph, was from about 6th grade when, on a playdate at his house, he proudly showed me his pet boa constrictor during its feeding time. (Poor little mouse.) Great kid.

I hadn't been in touch with Rip for many years, except for sharing some news about the New Canaan High School class of 1964. But my memory goes back to the mid-1950s, when, soon after my family moved to New Canaan, a woman with three little kids knocked on our door. It was Anita Pereida, searching for prospective neighborhood friends for Rip, Eddie and Laurie. In subsequent years, Rip and I had a lot of fun exploring the local woods, sledding and skating in the winter, riding our bikes the rest of the year, and engaging in harmless mischief with firecrackers. My condolences to the family.

We will miss saying, "Rip and Chrys".

Our whole family is blessed with many fun, silly, loving, kind, interesting, and serious memory making moments with "Rip and Chrys". I will miss Rip´s attendance at future "family" occasions, but I will always know he is there with Chrys and all of us in spirit.

Thank you Rip for your love and care of nature!
Thank you Rip for your interest in others and your ability to make those around you feel special. A true gift to all.

All our love and support to you Chrys!

In this world, I believe it is important to be surrounded by good people, and Rip was someone I was happy and proud to call a friend and neighbor. From the time that we moved into Osprey (and then later to Boise), he never hesitated to invite Tom and me into his & Chrys's life, suggesting hikes that we might enjoy, offering project ideas (with tools), and of course offering the cats up for snuggles when I needed them. He offered tips on improving my photography skills and shared his dad's drawings when I was just learning. The world needs more people like Rip, and he will be greatly missed. Kim and Tom

Rip will be missed. So glad to have made his acquaintance in 2018 as many fun times were had. The shot below was from a day hike he led in Leslie Gulch-Succor Creek area in Idaho. His back country hiking, camping and solo independence was always an inspiration.....his wit and kindness were always evident. We toasted him last week in Sun Valley and future trips to the mountains will include a wink to the heavens.

I met Rip and Chrys in 2006 after both of us moved to Osprey. I am happy to call both my very good friends. One of my favorite memories is going to their house in the middle of the afternoon on a cold winter day, snuggling down in a blanket and watching a movie or show( First episode of Outlander comes to mind as I write this). Chrys always fell asleep and Rip and I watched the show. I miss him dearly.

I knew from the moment I met Rip that we had so much in common and we would enjoy time together. Over the years we backpacked, snowshoed and fished. I will miss him greatly but I take comfort in knowing how fully he lived his life.
