March 27, 2009
My condolences to Randy's family and friends. I'd like to offer some warm memories of him along with my sympathy. Randy was a National Security Fellow here at Harvard, where I was and am on staff, and he brought his own special touch of humor to the fellowship. Randy delighted in leaving copies of "The Urology Times" in the office reception area, atop the "Air Force Times" and "Marine Corps Gazette." A conscientious surgeon, he didn't want to get out of practice during his year here, so he would volunteer his medical services at nearby Hanscom AFB. He also prowled around the Harvard NSP office, examining his colleagues for suspicious-looking moles. Any sort of skin irregularity that he could spot would evoke the question, "Would you like me to remove that for you?" Office humor led to the advice that you had better not fall asleep at your desk, or you would awaken to find that Randy had sliced off some unwanted piece of you... But he did use his medical skills to benefit his military brethren. He administered flu shots in the Harvard NSP office, and his inoculated patients were seen leaving with brightly colored super-hero band-aids covering up the puncture sites. He set up a fitness evaluation mini-station there, complete with an upright doctor's scale, so that military students and fellows didn't have to go all the way out to the base. And when the son of one of the fellows got a bad cut in a childhood mishap, the fellow called Randy instead of taking the child to the hospital. Randy had his medical bag at the ready and went to the house to stitch up the wound--saving the child and parent from a long, painful wait in an emergency room. Randy Falk made many friends among the fellows, staff, and faculty; he is fondly remembered at Harvard and will be dearly missed.

At this time of Thanksgiving, I offer my condolences, and my thanks, to the family of Randy Falk. I just learned of his death a few days ago. I followed in his steps at ANG headquarters, where he conceived the plan to train ANG flight docs in Aerospace Medicine, followed by headquarters assignment. I was the first to be honored by that plan; my life has been deeply enriched by his genius and foresight. So, thank you Rabbi and Mrs Falk, for the gift of your son who left us too soon.

I am very saddened to hear of Randy's passing. We first met in 1987 when he was studying at Brooks AFB. My wife and I had him over for seder and we began what was too short a friendship. He came up with the idea for the Top Knife F-16 training program for National Guard flight surgeons and along with Jim Whinnery, I helped him put it together. He was always on the cutting edge, looking out for the future of our profession and for others. The future is now and he helped make it. Shalom Chaver.

I knew Randy while he was in his Residency Training at Brooks AFB and later at AsMA meetings. He brought a glow with him everyday.
It was always a pleasure to be in a conversation with him. I know he will be sorely missed by his family, friends and all that really knew him.
His smile remains for eternity.

Our family, like many others, called Doc Falk by many names--Colonel Falk, Falkenstein, Uncle Randy, and so on. No moniker was more descriptive than, "friend."
Randall Falk was a wonderful friend. He was giving, understanding, and helpful to so many. He was honest, straightforward, and unpretentious.
For more than 12 years Doc provided us lasting memories. He was with us in Boston--we tried to whip him into shape; he taught us to eat. We took him to mass on Christmas Eve and were turned away because the church was full. We ended up at a Korean service in a mall and he never let me live it down--just this Spring we laughed about it during a visit to DC. It was fun to laugh with Doc. At Lara's and my wedding Randy mentored the groomsmen and regaled at the fact that none of us were comfortable with him holding a saber. The great memories continued through stops in Texas, Florida, England, and Georgia. Doc always found a way to visit and we did the same with trips to the Capitol. When our first son was born, Doc became "Uncle Randy". We roped him into being Simon's Godfather--it seemed appropriate given his Jewish faith and his sense of humor and he loved it as he loved so much and so many.
Doc Falk is missed. We miss him. We are thankful for the memories, we wish we could have been able to make more.
Our sincere condolences to the Falk family. Randy was a wonderful man, a wonderful friend.

I have known Randy Falk since we were residents at Vanderbilt. He and I became great friends while serving in the TNANG. We were both Guardsmen without any prior AD time. It turned out to be a crucial time for us to learn, work, and dream together.
Randy stood out from the very beginning. He was a true visionary, and time after time he was willing to stand up and "step outside the box" in order to tackle challenging issues. He was a gifted, articulate individual with an insatiable thirst for knowledge. Randy pursued fellowship after fellowship in order to prepare himself for the leadership role and various crucial assignments. Upon his completion of the "38th grade", he was ready to lead the ANGMS. His records speak for itself.
Colonel Falk always downplayed his success and stayed focused on the issues. He has mentored up and down his peers. There were no strangers in his house or his life. His home in Washington was the Holiday Inn Express for the ANG. His sincerity, generosity and tireless efforts have touched us all.
God’s speed Randy, you will always be in our thoughts and you will be sorely missed.

I recall many good times with Colonel Falk beginning at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government and after. He was always striving to make the Air Force better so that it could best serve the women and men in all the Services. He was a great friend, mentor and role model. He was always there with medical advice and support for his friends and associates, and "crazy," funny emergency room stories that could make you cringe and laugh. He made life easier for those around him and brought joy to many groups. We made many people laugh when we learned to scull/row on the Charles River in Cambridge, MA. When I had medical difficulties in the Air Force, he provided advice and stayed in touch more frequently to help me through recovery. Dr., Colonel (General to me) Falk is missed!

Dear Falk Family,
I was shocked to find out about "Doc's" death as his passing leaves a space in this world that will be hard to fill. He was such a great role model and I have always tried to emulate his graciousness and generosity. I am stunned to have lost such a great friend and mentor. Words cannot capture the amazing person who is no longer with us.
I met Doc Falk as a young 2LT at the Kennedy School in 1995 and we kept a strong friendship over the years. Doc was always there for me and I will miss our great chats.
I was blessed to have known Randy for as long as I did and will cherish the times we were able to share together.
Your family will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Edna and Rabbi, Heidi and Jon and their families, and Randy's many friends,
I first knew Randy when he was about 18 mos. old and I became his babysitter, his Jukey. I'll never forget the first time I sat with him. He cried. Finally he joined me in playing with the toys I was playing with. After that we were always close buddies. The first time I stayed with both boys, Jonny awoke and cried. Randy and I went upstairs to get Jon and Randy climbed on the side of the crib and said, "It's OK Jonny, Jukey's here."
I remember Seders at the Falk's, tree trimming at our house, coloring Easter Eggs and how he loved our lawn mower!
During his Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic we saw a lot of him. He introduced my husband and I to Dim Sum and regaled our son with Top Gun stories. He helped trim our tree that Christmas, too.
When I was in D.C. for a meeting we met for lunch in VA and I got a tour of the apartment and the town. What fun.
I will miss the little boy but I will miss the wonderful, giving, empathetic friend more. To the nieces and nephew: he loved you very much and was so proud of you, each one. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

To the Falk Family,
Randy was a terrific friend to our family for over 25 years. He was a man who always put others first and cared deeply for his family, friends and country. He was a terrific listener and sounding board both personally and professionally. Randy was such a good friend to me. I've never met anyone else with such a generous heart and boundless energy. He was kind not only to me, but also to my wife and children. He was such a welcome visitor, that we jokingly nicknamed our guest room "Randy's Room."

Rabbi Falk, Mrs Falk and Family-
I cannot imagine the grief you must be feeling at this terrible time. I pray you find comfort knowing how many individuals were positively affected by Col Falk's life. His amazing spirit, smiling face, zest for life, and dedication to the Air Guard were second to none. His tireless efforts to push the Air Guard Medical in to hyper-relevance can be seen all around us. He was not just a leader and a visionary but a friend to all. We are all better people for having known him.

Doc Falk was a super person! He could connect at all levels. In the Summer of 2005 I would pick him up at his condo in Alexandria and we would drive on a Saturday to Walter Reed to the Malone house to visit the GI's there. We would pick up Chinese food in Old Town, stop at Gaint the grocery store to load up some food and go visit the GI there to eat and give them food items they couldn't get to. He was always trying to help others in all lanes! We will all miss Him!

Dear Falk family. I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear of Randy's passing. I pray for God's face to shine on you all during this time of mourning, and for you to receive His comfort.
I remember first meeting Col Falk in Flight Surgeon school at Brooks AFB, TX in 2000. I was impressed as this Colonel took time to talk with myself, Doug Carlson, and Scott Shepherd (all lieutenants!) and find out our opinions on many issues.
We were fortunate to come into the ANG medical service at the time Col Falk was leading the charge for relevance and readiness and we, in our respective Units, benefited greatly from his vision, determination, and integrity.
A little while later my unit (119MDG, North Dakota ANG) was without a State Air Surgeon due to retirements and I was the only flight surgeon in the state. I had just barely made Major and Col Falk suggested I take the SAS class and be State Air. I was humbled by his confidence in me and impressed by his willingness to do things way outside the box to solve problems.
I don't know if ANG units "out in the field" ever had or ever will have another ally at "the bureau" who was as devoted as Col Falk to giving those on the front lines the tools needed to do the job asked of them.
I remember his hospitality at Hotel Falk, and chocolate covered blueberries at Trader Joe's. On another trip to DC we all had a great time as Randy, Ken Eggerstrom and his wife, and my wife and I all went out to eat at Cafe Salsa (apparently one of Randy's favorites) and then walked around Old Town Alexandria.
He was always friendly and exceptionally gracious, and he spoke lovingly and proudly of his family.
We will all miss him.

I am still shocked and saddened by Randy's death. He was such a wonderful person. I knew him for many years before we worked together at OASD/RA. One day he came into my cubicle with a tray of flu vacine. He was determined that all his friends be protected. He also assisted in expediting my son's commissioning physcial when it got caught up in red tape. I still take two daily medicines he prescribed for me when everyone else missed the diagnosis. I think of him each day when I take them. So many good memories of dinners with friends, sitting around the apartment talking.... I will miss him and know his family is heartbroken. May they find comfort knowing that he had so many good friends who loved and admired him.

Such a lost cannot be easy. All of us share your sadness. Our children, now teenagers, recall the many happy times he spent with us when they were very young and called him Dr Fork. Randy's legacy with the ANG medical service is nothing less than profound. He had a HUGE role in transforming a sleepy, nearly inert, cog of the lumbering Cold War military machine into the vibrant, forward-leaning medical force that we know today. The rapidity and depth of the change was truly startling, and is due in great part to the remarkable energy and clear thinking Randy brought to the Guard. I had the good fortune to know him for the last 20 years, and will miss hearing about the new things he always seemed to have in the hopper. Happy trails, Randy, and my condolences to his family.

One of my fellow warriors has fallen silent and his place in the ranks can not be filled. I had the energizing experience of working with Randy for over 20 years. We were not always on the same side of the fence, but there was no light between us in our mutual intent to serve the Reserve community. There are countless issues Randy championed, that others would have let go. His fearless approach to battle in spite of dire odds has been responsible for moving the Reserve Component relentlessly forward. There are countless members of the Reserve and Guard community that will continue to benefit from his efforts. He has set a high bar for others to follow and touched many with his spirit and dedication to serve his country. It has been my honor to serve beside him and to know him as a freind.

Randy was a friend and confidant since our residency and early Guard days. A visonary who worked tirelessly to improve the quality of medical care to those who need it, and the ability of the Air National Guard to do this, he will be missed and remembered by all whom his life's work touched.

To the Family of Randy Falk,
Please accept our sincere condolences. I met Randy through my husband and friends in San Antonio in 2001. I had the priviledge of getting to know him better when we moved to Alexandria in 2002. He introduced us to all the wonderful things that Virginia and Washington D.C. had to offer, especially his friendship. He was so kind and helpful in many ways. Along with the Rowley family, we shared many meals and fun times together. Memories we will never forget. Eric and I will miss him always. Rest in peace our wonderful friend.
Love, Eric, Lynene, Michael and Eli Hanson

To the family and friends of Randy, Falk,
We share with you an enormous sense of sadness for the loss of Randy, a friend, colleague and patriot. Many will remember Col Falk for his national and international accomplishments, improving the health and welfare of countless patients, military members and their families--to those who knew Randy personally, the memory is richer, punctuated with recollections of jousts over dinner, long walking discussions ranging from family concerns to national policy and his gleeful smile when opening a "Golden Egg." Whatever the task, Randy always seemed to have time. Like Randy, may we all be blessed to be remembered for our positive impact on the lives of others. We extend our deepest sympathies and earnest prayers.

Col. Randy Falk was a special friend and colleague of the IDF Medical Corps. He initiated and guided the medical cooperation between the ANG\USAF and the IDF. Incredibly intelligent, lively and kind person who had the unique quality to give without expecting something in return. I have learned greatly from him. His brightness and wisdom will truely be missed.
With love and appreciation:

My truest sympathies go out of the family of Doc Randy Falk. I got to work with and for Randy in a project he had a deep belief and passion for--helping deploying troops and their families build up resiliency in the face of the current operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. I got the sense he felt he was part of something that would give back to the service he very much believed in.
Randy had a teriffically wicked sense of humor and was as forward leaning of a person when he felt the cause was right as any I've worked with. He proved immediately welcoming to all those he came in contact with. And was a gracious and giving host when it came to visitors being put up at the "Hotel Falk," all in the interest of saving the government money. I've never had a host so willing to either go run to Trader Vic's to get something custom ordered or make a guest a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with a beer to wash it down with at 11:30 at night. Randy was a stand up person and soldier who believed in his service and country.
He will be greatly missed and it is comforting to know he lived a life rich, a life well, a life that gave back to others, a full life. If only he didn't have to leave it too soon.

To The Falk Family, My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Rany loved his parents --- he talked about his role as a son and shared this for bringing up my son. His family, being a Physician and the Air National Guard were his source of life and energy. I treasure all that I learned from him regarding his devotion for ensuring the best care for the military Airmen and their family. Randy will be truly missed. My sincere thoughts are with you at this difficult time but know that everyone who knew Randy share this loss with you.

To the Falk Family:
I will always remember Randy's laugh, thoughtfulness, energy and love for his family. He was always eager to help someone along, encouraging perseverance and a "can do attitude". Even when he forced me to eat multi-grain cereal to keep up my energy during my darkest days of graduate school, Randy did so with a giggle and arm of support.
My thoughts and prayers are with you,

In the short time we have known Col Falk, he has done many things for us in our life. My husband was injured in Iraq last November and was a patient at Walter Reed for four months. Col Falk came to visit us several times while we were there. He was always very genuine and offered his help with anything we needed. He introduced us to people that have made a tremendous difference in my husband's recovery and our lives. Even since we've come home, he has continued to keep track of us and help us with anything we needed. If I mentioned anything that we might need, I always had a phone call from someone who could help within the hour. He was truly amazing.
We have been greatly affected through his generosity and kindness. He truly loved America and her military. His life made such a difference in this world.
Although we didn't have the priviledge of knowing him for long, we know that the world will miss his presence. We too will miss him. May God give you peace during your time of loss.

Randy Falk has been part of our family for almost 20 years. It is difficult to find words to describe the void left by "the Mayor of Gotham City". He leaves an incredible legacy of accomplishment and of devotion; the world has been made a much better place because of Randy Falk. I feel honored to have known and worked with this truly phenomenal individual.
