Ravinesh KUMAR Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Feb. 11, 2015.
KUMAR, Ravinesh
Dr. Ravinesh Kumar, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Nand and Suman Kumar of Richmond, British Columbia, passed away in Chicago, Illinois on February 5, 2015. He was 42 years old. Ravinesh was two years old when he came with his family from Fiji and settled in Vancouver, B.C. He completed his primary education at Walter Moberly Annex Elementary in Vancouver and Quilchena Elementary in Richmond. After that to JN Burnett Jr Secondary, then to Richmond High Secondary School. Ravinesh continued with his undergraduate studies at Simon Fraser University and completed his Bachelor of Science in 1999 and obtained his PhD from the Department of Medical Genetics in 2006 from The University of British Columbia. Dr. Kumar joined The University of Chicago as a postdoctoral fellow in 2007 to investigate the genetics of neurodevelopment disorders. He was the Director of Research, Conte Center for Computational Neuropsychiatric Genomics, Department of Medicine (Section of Genetic Medicine). His desire and goal was to research mental health and illness which may be responsible for bipolar disorder, autism, schizophrenia and other related phenomena, in an effort to find cures for these diseases. Ravinesh has left behind his parents, two brothers Vikash and Roneil, sister-in-law Roya, nephew Roshan and niece Maliya, grandmother Mrs. Om Wati Prasad, and many uncles, aunts, cousins and friends. His life was short-lived but his family is very proud for the contributions and impact he made to the world of science. Ravinesh was a bright, loving and compassionate man. His charming and caring personality will be missed by all of us including the community in Chicago where he spent most of his professional life. In memory of their son, a Celebration of his Life will be held at the Vedic Cultural Centre, 8200 No. 5 Road, Richmond, B.C. on Saturday February 14, 2015 at 11:00 a.m.

February 5th. Such an ordinary, nondescript day. But for my family, February 5th is a heavy day. To us, February 5th is forever changed from a simple, unremarkable day to one of grave significance. It marks the day we lost our son, brother, nephew, and cousin, Rav.

When I woke up this morning, the date hung over my head like a dark cloud and I felt disbelief that one year had already past since he was taken away from us. One year ago, everything felt impossible. Today, time has shown us that life does go on, the seasons pass, and people move forward. But that doesn't mean we forget. There isn't one person that knew him who will ever forget the remarkable, brilliant, loving, charming, genuine, kind, and caring person that was my cousin, Rav. He was like the sun. He shone bright and brought warmth to everyone he encountered.

Rav, wherever you are, know that we are all thinking of you, loving you, and feeling the great absence of your presence in our lives. I miss you so much and I love you forever, cousin. One day we'll meet again.

Beloved Ravi,

One year today. As though you never left. Miss you, very much.
Love,
Renu Aunty

I'll never forget the day in junior high when you cuddled up close and said, "We have the same last name," and then smiled, like it was a good thing. I looked forward to seeing you all the time after that.

I held a few of you, even though a year younger, close to my heart because I loved the dynamic energy you all brought always. Each one different but amazing. I always felt like I had a few brothers and sisters in my life while at school. You were definitely one.

In your case, you had a very special way about you of making people feel better, sometimes in the face of some terrible obstacles. You reminded me of the positive energy within myself that no one or nothing could extinguish so that the same instilled energy can be shared with the next person. I guess someone is only as strong as their foundation before sharing that love with others. That isn't an easy feat to accomplish with stubborn people who don't share their feelings with just anyone, but you managed it, like an angel, always. It came from a place of understanding, like only a brother can know. Thank you for that.

Thanks for all the dances as children/teens. Save me a dance on a star when we meet again.

Dear Rav, you are such a great loss to us all. Your accomplishments are many, but to us you were a loving nephew who always brought the family together during your visits here. As a youngster, you charmed us with your gift of gab, your funny ways, your curious mind and your sunshine qualities. You have a very special place in our hearts; in my heart. Miss you very much. Love Always, Aunty Renu

I still cannot believe you are gone, dear cousin. You were the eldest of us 19 cousins, and you have always been our number one role model.

I remember when I was in elementary school, we had to choose a role model to write a report on. Without hesitation, I chose you as my role model because you were the smartest person I knew. I had such a fun time interviewing you and you even took me on a tour in the lab! I felt so proud to have such a brilliant (yet modest) older cousin like you.

I love that I get to say I have a lot in common with you. We both have a love for animals (especially dogs) and wanted to be vets (although you obviously had the better chance of becoming one since you're the genius haha). We both are vegetarians but have a love for seafood. We both love photography. I remember long time ago you passed on the torch to me to be the family photographer and to capture all the loving and fun moments at our family get-togethers. I will never stop doing that for you, Ravi.

I miss you so much. I miss your long, warm hugs. I miss your contagious smile and laughter. I miss you taking multiple selfies with everyone. I miss you wanting to learn about all of our lives. I miss your positive, happy energy. I miss your brotherly love. I will never stop missing you, Ravi. I want you to know that you have and always will be my number 1 role model.

I love you forever and always, Bhaiya.

Your cousin,
Teresa

Mukund,Laxman babu, Mahima, Mala, Bishal and I am very shocked and sad about this untimely death. We watched the video presentation and thought how come God could pick someone who is so nice and extremely talented. He still had to serve the society and the world with deep experience and knowledge.

We have to convince ourselves that this is what God had in mind. We have no full control over our life. Everybody has to go according to his /her destined fate.
May his soul be with God in Heaven.
Biva.

We grew up together. We both were kids when we came to Canada as first generation immigrants in the early 70's. We became friends instantly at Quilchena elementary school, and although we lost touch over the years, I never forgot about him. Your charm, your smile, and your laughter were infectious. We didn't have many classes together in high school or at UBC, but I remember I could always hear your laughter down the hallway from class in Burnett, and Richmond High. I'll never forget that. You're gone, but you'll never be forgotten my friend. Rest in peace. My condolenecs to your family.
