Ray Newman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 9, 2017.
Ray Bowen Newman passed away on February 8, 2017. He was born in Wilsall, Montana on August 11, 1922. Ray is survived by his wife Hazel, daughter Dianna Steres and her husband Gary, his son Terry Newman and his wife Judy, his 8 grandchildren and his 21 great-grandchildren. His parents were Dona (Bowen) and George Newman.

Football was Ray's passion. Ray was a highly successful junior college football coach and a professional football scout for over 28 years. He signed Warren Moon to his first professional football team, the Edmonton Eskimos. During his tenure as the very successful college coach in Bakersfield College, he touched the lives of many young athletes-men who used the lessons learned from Coach Newman to launch outstanding careers. His players stayed in touch, visiting Coach and sharing their lives and acknowledging lasting importance to them.

Ray and Hazel divided their time between homes in Phoenix, Arizona and Missoula, Montana. Ray loved his Montana life where he kept a productive vegetable garden and he and Hazel spent summers canning vegetables, fishing streams and enjoying many friendships.

I can't beleive it's been a year since we lost you. I miss you so much. I think about you every single day. I'd give anything to give you one more hug and tell you how much I love you.

My grandpa was such an inspiration for me and many others. From players, coaches, family, and to all others the knew him or of him. I remember the summers we had fishing on Lolo Creek, and the man who taught me golf, among many other things. But most of all to be a man, and when life throws you a 61 fly pattern and it's incomplete. Practice, practice, and practice those drills and you will once again become successful. A quote that grandpa used to say was "I'll never give up on a player regardless of his ability as long as he never gives up on himself. In time he will develop." Goodbye Grandpa, I will love and miss you always.

Our prayers are with Hazel and the Newman family. Ray was always a positive influence with me since our first football days together at Bakersfield College in 1965. He was a friend and mentor and will always be remembered.
