Raymond Bisha Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 9, 2025.
With deep sorrow, we note the passing of Raymond Bisha, eldest son of Norma Lee and Edward Bisha, on August 5, 2025.

Born to a musical family, Raymond found his lifelong calling in music, first as a professional French horn player and then as a promoter and manager on different sides of the music industry. He studied French horn formally in Detmold and Cologne, then earned his Bachelor of Music Performance at the University of Toronto. Returning to Germany, he played for two years in a touring opera orchestra before transitioning to arts management through a program launched jointly by the Canadian Opera Company, the National Ballet of Canada, and George Brown College. After three years as tour and television production manager for the Canadian Opera Company, he spent five years as a producer for Stereo Morning at CBC Radio 2 before finally joining Naxos of Canada and then Naxos of America. There, he dedicated the next thirty years, rising to the position of Senior VP of Marketing. Beyond his role connecting products to buyers and performers and composers to audiences, Raymond's own initiatives at Naxos generated hundreds of weekly podcasts that explored countless facets of the global music scene. He also launched Naxos en Español, a social media platform providing access to classical music in Spanish, a language he took it upon himself to learn.

Fueling this diverse career was a restless curiosity, musical and otherwise. The same spirit that drove him to make cross-country skis as a teenager and then write and publish about it also drew him to new places, people, and cultures throughout his life. It helped him arrive in Germany that first summer, armed only with a suitcase, his horn, and little German. It led him onto many stages as a performer and into new places in the music industry, each a world of its own. It inspired him to co-create a new-music concert series in Toronto. It energized twenty years of creative podcasting with Naxos, compelled him to learn Spanish, and inspired professional and personal outreach to Spanish-speaking communities in North America and overseas. Even his formal position at Naxos, where he navigated emerging technologies and audiences in an age of streaming, roused his intrepid soul.

Innately humane, Raymond dignified and elevated everything he did and everyone he met. The suddenness of his passing, a lightning strike to all who knew him, also means his ennobling, passionate trek through the world stayed vital to the end. We hold this thought dear as we now struggle to reckon with his loss.

Raymond is survived by his wife Carol, their daughter Alicia and her partner Andrew, brother Bernard, and brother Tim and his wife Ji-Eun.

As program director for Kansas City's classical radio station, KXTR, and classical music columnist for The Kansas City Star, I had the great honor and pleasure of working with Raymond on several projects over the years. He was one of the most gracious and thoughtful people I have ever dealt with. I am very saddened he is no longer with us, but will always think of him fondly and with the utmost respect.

I was so saddened to hear Raymond's sudden passing. I have a fond memory of meeting him in NYC - I remember his great sense of humor and wish that I'd reached out sooner to meet him again. I'm heartbroken for the family and my thoughts are with Tim and Jieun, and the entire family.

This is hard news to come to terms with. Carol and Alicia, you are deeply in my thoughts. Raymond was everything these remembrances here suggest and more. He is missed.

Sigh. I know how old I am and how old my friend Raymond was, because I called him on his birthday in July, and we had a big old reunion conversation. Then we met for supper when he was visiting Toronto. What a lucky person I am to have seen for myself how fully alive he was, how generous his friendship and his cultural understanding. I somehow knew him for about 35 years, I think, from when we were both a bit new to Toronto.

Yes it is a big task to reckon with his loss, and I'm sending heartfelt condolences to Carol Ann and Alicia, chief among all of those who are so suddenly bereft. I look forward to gathering with friends and offering up some song in his memory.

I'm shocked and saddened by Raymond's sudden passing. We had several memorable lunches together during his infrequent visits to Los Angeles over the years - and I will aways appreciate his kindness and his generosity to me, especially during one difficult time 10 years ago when my own mother passed away. I thank him for all of the recordings that he passed along to me, many of which I wrote about for several publications (the Los Angeles Times and others). And I convey my deepest condolences to his family. - Richard S. Ginell

I am so sorry to learn that Raymond has died. He was one of
the first students of the Income Managers Program created by
the Canadian Opera Company and The National Ballet of Canada
with George Brown College.
His contributions to the world of classical music were substantial.
My best wishes to his family and his wide network of friends and
professional colleagues.

Raymond crossed borders the way great music does-quietly, completely, with heart.
He chose to learn Spanish, syllable by syllable, to listen better.
In Mexico he found not only an audience but friends who became family, and through Naxos en Español he gave that community a warm, generous voice.
His laughter traveled easily between languages; his kindness needed no translation. We remember the broadcaster´s voice, the mentor´s patience, and the friend who always made room for another chair at the table.
Raymond believed music could enlarge a life, and he proved it-note by note, word by word, friend by friend. He will be deeply missed, and we will keep the music going.
Descansa en paz, querido Raymond. Gracias por tanto.

Raymond was truly my role model, a real inspiration for my work, an inexhaustible source of knowledge and anecdotes from the world of music, a colleague who always had an open ear for his colleagues: a cosmopolitan, polyglot, always ready to learn something new, he was a critical mind, but full of kindness, a mensch. His voice on numerous podcasts I listened to was as unique as his personality. Yes, the news of his passing has hit me hard. I have lost not only a dear, dear colleague, but also a friend.

Heartbroken about Raymond's passing. A friend, a colleague, a mentor, a confidant, a shoulder to cry on...he was all those things and much more. The world is a poorer place for losing such an extraordinary person. RIP my friend.
