Raymond BROOKS Obituary

Published by Calgary Herald from Feb. 15 to Feb. 18, 2014.
BROOKS, Raymond Albert
February 9, 1936 – February 12, 2014
After a brief battle with cancer, our much loved husband, dad and special grandpa passed away February 12, 2014. Ray is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Elizabeth (Libby), children Cathy (Myles) O'Connor, Kevin (Alanna) Brooks, Christie (Al) Krawchuk and eight grandkids, Logan, Owen, Morgan, Jenna, Avery, Brett, Libby and Blair. Ray was a lifetime Calgarian and youngest of 12 children, born February 9, 1936 to Albert John and Henrietta Marion Brooks. He is survived by his siblings Stan (Connie), Mervin (Gerry), Maxine, Doris and countless nieces, nephews and cousins. Ray was the Vice-President of MacCosham Van Lines where he worked for 35 years prior to retirement. He and Libby were members of The Kinsmen Club for 16 years, forming many great friendships which last to this day. Ray was nothing if not a sportsman. He enjoyed a game of golf but his passion was hockey. His skill as a goalie earned him the nickname "Stingy." He played briefly for the Medicine Hat Tigers, then the Calgary Stampeders Hockey Club. He joined the Calgary Fire Department (they needed a goalie!) before he hung up his skates. His love of the game of hockey lives on in his grandsons and granddaughters. When they are at the rink or on the soccer field he will always be watching. Ray was a handyman extraordinaire to the benefit of everyone in his extended family. He was a "putterer" at home and in his beautiful backyard garden. Ray's family wishes to extend a special thank you to his caring doctor, Doug Caine. Friends are invited to join us from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Thursday, February 20 at the Glencoe Club, 636 - 29 Avenue S.W. for a celebration of his life. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations may be made to the Alberta Children's Hospital, 2888 Shaganappi Trail N.W., Calgary, AB T3B 6A8. Expressions of sympathy may be left for the family at www.southcalgaryfuneralcentre.ca. SOUTH CALGARY FUNERAL CENTRE and CREMATORIUM (at Lake Fraser Gate). Telephone: 403-297-0711. Honoured Provider of Dignity Memorial.

I was very sorry to hear of Ray's passing. It's been many years since I worked for him at MacCosham's. He gave me a chance to move into the sales group and here I am, forty years later, still working in the moving industry. When I look back, we probably didn't appreciate how much he supported all of us. I'll be planting a tree in his memory this summer.

Dear Libby and Family: We were so saddened to hear of your husband and father's passing. We never met Ray but used to hear such good things about him from Gayle.
He sounded like a great guy - we find it hard to.believe you two were married 52 years - Still think of you Lib as a twenty-something girl.
Pease accept our sincere sympathy. Lois and Hugh MacKenzie

Dear Libby, and Family. I just learned to-day of Rays passing, and sorry I wont make it to the Glencoe club. When I started at MacCosham's in 1968, Ray told the sales people I wouldn't last. However, 46 years later I am still working with a moving company, thanks to Ray he gave me the opportunity to go into Sales.
Please give my regards to your family, and they will be in my prayers.

Kevin and Family

I am deeply saddened by this news as I have been thinking of Ray quite a bit over the last year or so and wondering how he and Libby were doing, How I wish I had tried to get in touch earlier.

I have always held your Dad in the highest esteem and feel privileged to have have known and worked with him for as long as I did. He was one of the last of a kind; a smart, quick thinking, creative and innovative businessman who maintained the highest levels of integrity and ethics. Whatever he saw in me in my earlier years I'm not sure but, it was his vision and mentoring that afforded me, and a large number of others, to achieve whatever levels of success we did reach.

He was also much more than a colleague as was often evidenced by the "soirees" he and Libby held at the family home(s). The hospitality, camaraderie and friendship of those times is something that is cherished and dearly missed.

I hope that Libby, you and your sisters realize just how much of a difference he made and to how many people. He was a leader, a builder and a friend. In the city of my birth, I can say that he was also a true Calgarian at a time when that really meant something and had only the very best connotations. His drive helped many to work towards building the city to some its most notable achievements.

Please accept my most sincere condolences and pass them along to your mother and sisters. He was a damned good man who will be sorely missed.

Thank you keeping me in mind. I greatly appreciate your email.

Best wishes to you all.

Cathy, Myles, Logan, Owen:
As next door neighbours for almost two decades we have seen Ray and Libby sitting in your backyard enjoying the company of all four of you. When Logan and Owen were little we used to watch them chasing Ray and Libby's little dog around the yard.
Ray was a symbol of honesty and true friendship to his grandsons - a quality not lost on us as grandparents ourselves. His love of hockey has manifested itself in Logan and Owen. Your good memories of a fine dad and grandfather will help you through this time as a celebration of Ray's life.
You have been wonderful neighbours and friends. We will miss seeing Ray but his presence will always be felt by us.
