Raymond Broussard Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 17, 2025.
Raymond Douglas "Doug" Broussard, 78, passed away on April 13, 2025, in Round Rock, Texas. Born on November 17, 1946, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Doug led a life marked by service, curiosity, and a deep appreciation for both family and the outdoors.

Doug's early education took him to Georgia Military Academy in Atlanta, Georgia. His desire to fly fighters led him to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he graduated in 1968. He later pursued further studies at the University of Southern California (USC), to attain his masters degree in history.

Upon graduating from the Air Force Academy, Doug began his military career as a WSO (Weapons Systems Officer/Navigator) with the 336th Tactical Fighter Squadron. From 1968 until 1976, he flew missions that would become some of the most memorable moments of his life. He once said, "Some of the best years of my life were when I was flying." In 1976, Doug transitioned into intelligence work within the Air Force and continued serving with distinction until his retirement in 1989. His passion for aviation and military aircraft remained with him throughout his life.

Following his military service, Doug embarked on a second career as an environmental engineer. He worked diligently in this field until his final retirement in 2015. His professional life reflected not only a strong work ethic but also a strong moral fortitude.

Doug had a deep love for the outdoors. Whether fishing, camping, or horseback riding, he found peace and joy in nature. Animals held a special place in his heart-especially dogs and cats-and he rarely met one he didn't like.

An avid reader and student of history, Doug often enjoyed visiting historical destinations through his travels. While he valued solitude and reflection, Doug was also deeply family-oriented. He enjoyed family gatherings and maintained close bonds with those around him.

Doug is lovingly remembered by his son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Laura Broussard; grandsons Diego and Alexander Broussard; first wife Ellen Verdel; sister Diana Broussard-McChesney and her husband Pat Mitchell; brother Gordon Broussard and his wife Louise; nephew Charles Broussard and his spouse Yvette; niece Teresa Ariola; stepson Tom Patterson and his wife Cara; and step-granddaughters Cristen and Rachel Patterson.

He was preceded in death by his parents Raymond C. Broussard and Ann D. Broussard; second wife Patricia Broussard; daughter E. Michele Broussard; and sister Catherine B. Gregg.

A Graveside Service will be held on May 21, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at United States Air Force Academy 2304 Cadet Dr., Colorado Springs, Colorado.

I first met Doug when he attended Marist College High School in Atlanta, GA. At that time it was an all male military highschool. We were always seated in alphabetical order, so Broussard was before Chaffin, hence I always sat behind Doug. This was in the 9th grade at Marist. Our history teacher was Coach Shea. He for some unknown reason decided to call Doug "Buzzy." Somehow it stuck, and I and many others know Doug as Buzzy. After attending Marist, Buzzy transferred to GMA in Atlanta.

Buzzy's sister, Catherine, was best friends with my deceased wife, Valerie. I kept in touch with Buzzy and Gordon through Catherine. I always enjoyed seeing Buzzy and reminiscing about highschool and the fun we had.

I will miss Buzzy and Catherine always.

Doug was the eldest of my maternal cousins...the tall one in the photo. We stair-stepped down in age, and our two families lived close to each other--so we were always together for holidays and birthdays. Here we are, all gathered around our beloved grandmother on her 60th birthday in 1960. Too many good memories to list. It's sad to let go. Rest in peace, Doug.

Coming from a family of sisters, Doug, my brother-in-law for many years, was one of my honorary "brothers."I was proud of his military service and glad to have him in the family. He will be missed.

Doug and I met at the AFA when he was a doolie and I was a freshman at Colorado College. We maintained a friendship until his death. He often called me his best friend. His son and grandchildren were a constant source of pride. I had the deepest fondness and respect for him and will miss him dearly.
