In 1986 I got orders to VFA-87 at NAS Cecil Field in Jacksonville, FL. Then CDR Dudderar, who was the CO had only a couple of months left but I could tell that he was a no nonsense trailblazer; yelled and screamed at times but it was in a respectful and motivational way. The XO at that time was then CDR Timothy Keating, who would go on to become CO and later a full blown Admiral; and I know though CDR Keating became a super CO, the fact that he became a super CO and later Admiral I believe can be traced back to CAPT Dudderar having complete and utter confidence in him. A super guy, super CO, Super Sailor/Officer! My deepest sympathies and condolences to the Family. I know it's late, but "better late than never."

LT Dudderar was our avionics division officer with VA-86 aboard USS America in 1972. He cared about sailors and was a great attack pilot and a decent human being. Our paths crossed several times over the years afterwards. RIP Sir!

I worked for CDR (then CAPT) Dudderar at Strike in the mid 1980's. He was such a terrific leader, and a good man. I was sad to hear of his passing. My prayers go out to his family as well as my other shipmates.
