Raymond Prefontaine Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 23 to Dec. 24, 2004.

Dec. 11, 1919 - Dec. 21, 2004

Traditional funeral services for Raymond G. Prefontaine, 85, of Coos Bay, will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 29, at Coos Bay Chapel, 685 Anderson Ave. Don Berney will officiate. Private family interment will be at Sunset Memorial Park.

He was born Dec. 11, 1919, to Henry and Delena Prefontaine, in Eggland, N.D. He died of kidney failure on Dec. 21, 2004, in Coos Bay.

Early in his life, he moved with his family to Coos Bay. As a young man, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in World War II as an occupational soldier in Berlin, Germany. There he met his future wife, Elfriede Sennholz, in February 1946. On July 2, 1948, they married, and in August came to Coos Bay to join his family.

Ray and Elfriede had two children, Steve and Linda. Ray worked as a skilled carpenter and welder. He loved to fish, hunt, golf, square dance, travel and spend time with family and friends. He enjoyed being involved as an active committee member of the Prefontaine Memorial Run and was the annual race starter.

He is survived by his wife, Elfriede; daughters, Neta and Linda, both of Eugene; grandson, Mike of Portland; and granddaughter, Kris and her husband, Bruce, and their two children, Austin and Audrey, of Cheshire.

He was preceded in death by his son, Steve, in 1975.

Ray, you were a great and good man..my heart and condolences go out to Elfriede, Neta, Linda, and the rest of your loving family. I appreciated knowing you for over 20 years...you enriched my life. Your tenacity as a hard-worker and military vet I believe transferred to Steve and gave him some of his legendary toughness. I am glad that you are together again. May you both RIP...Sincerely, your friend Gary Dobbs
