Raymond Wing Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 17, 2010.
PLYMOUTH - Ray Wing, 90, died Sept. 14, 2010, at Veterans Administration Hospital Hospice Unit, Togus. He was born Sept. 20, 1919, in Mars Hill, a son of Caston and Christina (Ricker) Wing. Ray served as a tech sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war, he moved to Plymouth and married the former Eva Landry, who predeceased him June 3, 2000. Ray was a carpenter and tree farmer and was awarded the Outstanding Tree Farmer of New England Award in 1972. He was a member of Benevolent Lodge No. 87, Carmel, Anah Shrine and Barrows-Skidgel Post No. 105 American Legion, Newport. Throughout the years, he attended Calvary Baptist Church, Newport, and Emmanuel Bible Baptist Church, Plymouth. Ray was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing and riding his four-wheeler in the woods to prune his trees. He shot his last deer at age 90. Ray cut his own lumber in his sawmill, which he operated with his family. He also enjoyed traveling, including trips to Florida and New Foundland, and puttering on his tractors. He is survived by a daughter, Patricia and husband, Mike Grass, of Plymouth; two grand-children, Lisa and husband, Bill Pelkey, and Mike Grass Jr. and wife, Brandy; four great-grandchildren, Billy, Mikayla, Dana and Brandon, all of Plymouth; and a sister, Eleanor Goodridge of Bangor. He was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth; and sister, Luella. The family thanks the wonderful staff at Togus Hospice for the care Ray received, especially his aides, Gail and Kathy, and all the nurses. He also was able to stay at home for several years prior to his illness with the help of his special home care workers, Vivian and Lisa, and many other home health nurses and aides from Community Health and Counseling Services. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main St., Newport, with the Rev. Robert Emrich officiating. Burial will be at Sawyer Cemetery, Plymouth. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to VAVS Hospice Unit, Voluntary Services 135, Department of Veterans Affairs, 1 VA Center, Augusta, ME 04330. Sorry to hear about Ray. I worked at East Newport Grocery for many years and remember him coming in almost everyday to get a few ice cream sandwiches. He was always a great pleasure to wait on and would always have a story or two. Keep the memories alive with many stories of him and his life. Dale Bessey
