Reberta Wengrow Karesh, a resident of Camden, SC, died on September 23, 2025, at the home of her brother, Arnold Wengrow, of Asheville, NC. She was 94. She was born on August 10, 1931, the daughter of the late Sura Wolff Wengrow and the late Sam Wengrow of Allendale, SC, and Columbia, SC. She grew up in Allendale, where she graduated valedictorian from Allendale High School in 1949. She attended the University of South Carolina in Columbia, where she met and married Jack Karesh of Camden, SC in 1952. They had three sons, David, Richard (Rick), who died in 1993, and Carl. In Camden, Ms. Karesh was active in civic affairs, serving as the president of the Junior Welfare League and a volunteer with the Camden Community Theatre. She worked for the Camden City Schools as a teacher's aide and for many years as the library assistant at North Central High School. She started the School Arts Program of the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County and was its director for many years, bringing performances to the schools and placing artists in music, dance, theatre, and literature in residencies to work with students. For this work, she received the Harriet Phelps Service Awarded for dedication and promotion of the arts in Kershaw County. She was also honored by the City of Camden in 2005 for creating the Black History Heritage Tea and the Artists-in-Residence programs for the city schools. She returned to the University of South Carolina in later life and graduated magna cum laude in 1981 with a degree in English. She was an active volunteer with Temple Beth El in Camden and served on its cemetery committee. She is survived by Arnold Wengrow of Asheville, NC, David Karesh and Will Cooper of Florence, SC, Carl Karesh of Camden, SC, a granddaughter. Carri Goldstein of Lexington, MA, a niece, Rebecca Wengrow Fixel of Jacksonville, FL, a great-niece, Abigail Fixel of New York, Jennifer, Ryan, and Jerry Price of Columbia, SC, Cynthia and Charlie Rabon of Camden, Trevor, Sarah, and Ellie Rabon of Beaufort, SC, and Makaela Karesh Burdett of Anderson, SC. She was buried on September 26, 2025, next to her son, Richard Wolff Karesh, at the Beth El Cemetery in Camden. Memorials may be made to the Richard Wolff Karesh Music Scholarship, c/o Arts Center of Kershaw County, 810 Lyttleton St, Camden, SC 29020.

So sorry to hear of Reberta´s passing. I first met her when we were children and the Wengrow family would come to Columbia to attend Beth Shalom for the High Holidays.
