Reginald Harper Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and The Province from Oct. 20 to Oct. 22, 2006.

HARPER _ Reginald Robert died peacefully after a short struggle with cancer on October 18, 2006. Reg was born on December 4, 1916 in Regina. After teaching school for a year, he completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Saskatchewan, where he met and married his wife, Anita. During the war, he completed Medical school in Winnipeg and after his discharge, settled in the Lower Mainland, establishing his home and practice first in New Westminster and then in Surrey in 1951. In the wintertime, Reg and Anita loved to ski with their friends and family. Spring and fall were their favorite times for travel, while summers were spent at their family retreat at Sakinaw. But Reg's greatest passion was flying small aircraft. He loved adventure and flew as far north as Inuvik, south to the Baja and all across the United States and Canada. 2005 was his last big trip, with his grandson, Dave, to Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He continued his practice as an Aviation Medical Examiner until one month ago. Since Anita's death in March 2005, Reg continued to work, was an active member of the Boundary Bay Flying Club, the Newton Seniors Computer Club, the North Shore Organ Group and enjoyed lunches with his friends and family. He will be sorely missed by all his friends, his brother, Dick, his daughters, Robin, Dawn, and Jeanine, sons-in-law, grandchildren and first great-grandson. Please join them for an informal celebration of his life, Monday, October 23 at 2:00 p.m. at Glenbrook Park Amenities Centre, 76 Jamieson Crt, New Westminster. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation or to the Surrey Hospice Society.

October 23, 2006

My family was having breakfast at Boundary Bay Airport yesterday, when I read the notice that was posted on the wall at our table. I was sad to read of the passing of the doctor who helped bring me into this world. He was always very kind and had a wonderful nurse who worked for him-I think it her name was Alice. He was kind to my mom and dad and shared many a laugh with my mom, who was a nurse at RCH until she had me in 1954. My sincere condolences to his family.
