Rena Barrow Stevens was born on February 16, 1954 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and died at her home on Monday, April 7, 2014 in Baton Rouge. She was 60, and she was an extremely talented artist known for her painting of Oak Alley Plantation. She taught art to many students over the years and was able to call many of them lifelong friends. She had many gifts, but her passion was essential oils. Whether you met Rena in a grocery store line at Whole Foods or a yoga class, her passion and love for alternative medicine and essential oils radiated from her. She graduated from Redemptorist High School and was very strong in her Catholic faith. She is survived by her two loving sons, Brandon Michael Stevens of Lexington, KY, and Jonathan Luke Stevens of Boston, MA; siblings, Helen Barrow Dedon and husband Jeff, and Essie Barrow, and Gerard Barrow, all of Baton Rouge. Preceded in death by her parents, Gloria Hernandez Barrow and Irvin P. Barrow; and a brother, Clifton Barrow. Visiting will be held at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 445 Marquette Avenue, on Wednesday, April 9, 2017 from 9:30 AM until memorial mass at 10:00 AM, conducted by Father Cleo Milano. The family would like to thank Rena's many friends for all their love and support during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of choice. Family and friends may sign the online memorial, leave a personal note to the family, or order flowers at www.resthavenbatonrouge.com.

I am so sorry to hear about Rena. I have great memories of grade school and high school. I remember going to her house for a party in elementary school and being together in our made up "boys clubs" (clubs where we all liked the same boy). Those were good and happy times. I know she will live on in you two sons. My thoughts are with you.

Brandon and Jonathan, your mom was the wind beneath my wings and the sister of my heart. She was a very special lady that gave to everybody she met and then some. We now have an angel up above watching over us forever. Because of her I now have many sisters from art class and that is an exceptional gift from your mom, which I cherish very much. Keeping you both in my prayers.

Words cannot express my sorrow at the loss of my dear cousin and friend, Rena. She has not only given me artistic beauty with her paintings, but she has given me love, friendship, encouragement, and support to live a hoistic life of health and grace. Her faith was very strong, even when I visited her this past Christmas. Rena had many gifts, more than I can mention. Her legacy will go on for a long time with all she did for those she came into contact. My prayers are with Brandon and Jonathan and all her family and friends. Her spirit will always be with me!

Rena had a beautiful painting on display at Goudchaux of Madonna and child. This had to be at least 35 years ago. To this day I beleive it to be one of the most beautiful I have seen.

Rena will be greatly missed for she loved God, people, and graciously tried to share her heart and her knowledge of healing with essential oils so that others would be helped. For 45 years I lived in a small county in Western North Carolina, when we moved to Baton Rouge in 1995 I was lost and lonely. My now dear friend suggested paint classes with Rena. Little did I know that over the years that Rena would not only teach me to paint, but would embrace me, love me, empower me, dousing me with essential oils we would laugh or cry together. She was not just a teacher and healer but bound her students together as sisters and she was our core. Rena is our angel now and I am certain she is still looking over us with love. My thoughts and prayers are with her dear sons.
